The Federal Correctional Institution, Danbury (FCI Danbury), located in Connecticut, is a low-security federal prison catering to both male and female inmates. Operated by the BOP, it also houses a nearby satellite prison camp (SCP) dedicated to minimum-security female offenders. Situated approximately 55 miles from New York City, 60 miles from Hartford, CT, and 150 miles from Boston, MA, the facility enjoys accessibility to various transportation hubs.

Established in 1940, FCI Danbury initially housed high-profile political prisoners during World War II, including conscientious objectors such as poet Robert Lowell and civil rights activist James Peck. From 1993 to 2013, the facility exclusively housed female prisoners. However, in August 2013, to alleviate overcrowding across the federal prison system, it was decided to convert FCI Danbury back to an all-male facility. This decision led to the transfer of female inmates to the FCI Aliceville in Alabama. Today there remains a small number of minimum security female inmates in the Camp (184 in 2024).

Women in prison are often the primary or sole caregivers of children before incarceration. For offenders who will give birth during their incarceration, there are two programs offered to assist these mothers before, during, and after childbirth; these include Mothers and Infants Together (MINT) and the Residential Parenting Program (RPP). The Program Statement, Female Offender Manual, is the agency's primary policy addressing the management of incarcerated women. The agency also issued an Operations Memorandum requiring all female sites to provide five types of feminine hygiene products to inmates free of charge.

Notable inmates who have served time at FCI Danbury include real estate investor Leona Helmsley, religious leader Sun Myung Moon, Grammy-winning singer Lauryn Hill, reality TV personality Teresa Giudice, and author Piper Kerman, whose experiences inspired the popular Netflix series "Orange Is the New Black."

In terms of housing, inmates at FCI Danbury reside in dormitories or cubicle housing, while those at the satellite camp are housed in dormitories. The facility offers comprehensive health services, including routine medical and dental care, health promotion, disease prevention, and mental health care provided by the Psychology Services Department.

FCI Danbury provides various educational opportunities, including literacy, GED, and English-as-a-Second Language (ESL) programs, with incentives for inmates making progress. Vocational training is offered in Culinary Arts, Horticulture, and other fields, while apprenticeships are available in various trades. The leisure libraries at FCI Danbury and the satellite facilities offer inmates access to a variety of reading materials, and legal materials are provided for research purposes. Inmates can also participate in the UNICOR program, producing electronics and plastics.

Commissary services allow inmates to purchase items using funds from their accounts, while recreation services encompass indoor and outdoor activities such as sports, music programs, and wellness initiatives, promoting physical and mental well-being among the inmate population.
