The Federal Correctional Institution, Terre Haute (FCI Terre Haute), situated in Indiana, operates as a medium-security federal prison for male inmates within the Federal Correctional Complex, Terre Haute (FCC Terre Haute). This complex encompasses not only FCI Terre Haute but also includes an adjacent satellite prison camp tailored for minimum-security male offenders. Additionally, in close proximity stands the USP Terre Haute, a high-security federal prison.

A notable aspect of FCI Terre Haute is its controversial high-security wing known as the Communication Management Unit (CMU). This unit, situated on the former death row and inaugurated in December 2006, houses inmates deemed to pose a serious threat if their communications were not severely restricted. Inmates in the CMU are subject to extensive surveillance, with all phone calls monitored except those with their attorneys. Additionally, strict controls are imposed during visits, prohibiting physical contact with family members, while all mail and conversations must be conducted in English unless special permission is granted.

The population of the CMU primarily consists of Arab Muslims convicted of terrorism-related offenses, including individuals involved in high-profile post-September 11th cases and other significant criminal incidents. Notable inmates housed in the CMU include former CIA counterintelligence agent Aldrich Ames, serving a life sentence for espionage; Matthew F. Hale, serving a 40-year sentence for soliciting the killing of Judge Joan Lefkow; and Al-Qaeda supporter Farooque Ahmed, sentenced to 23 years for involvement in a bombing plot.

In terms of housing, inmates at FCI Terre Haute are accommodated in cells, with health services providing medical and dental sick call, emergency care, medication provision, and annual and bi-annual physical examinations. Psychology services offer support for behavioral and emotional issues, with various programs available for inmates seeking to address mental health concerns.

Both FCI Terre Haute and the satellite camp offer a Residential Drug Abuse Program (RDAP), along with other drug education initiatives and support groups. Educational opportunities include GED and English-as-a-Second Language (ESL) programs, as well as vocational training in areas such as building trades, computers, and diesel mechanics.

The facility's library services offer a range of reading materials, including fiction, nonfiction, and legal reference materials, while UNICOR facilities handle fleet management and vehicle components. Inmates can make purchases from the commissary, with recreation programs encompassing indoor and outdoor activities, sports, physical fitness, and hobby craft programs.

Inmates have options for additional purchases from the Commissary. It provides a bank-type account for their money & for the procurement of articles not issued regularly as part of the institution's administration. Funds deposited by family, friends, or other sources are stored in the commissary account, Here is a list and prices of items sold at the commissary in FCI Terre Haute

Overall, FCI Terre Haute maintains a comprehensive range of services and programs aimed at supporting inmates' physical, mental, and educational needs while promoting rehabilitation and successful reintegration into society.
