The Brevard Jail is a low/medium-security detention center located at 855 Camp Rd Cocoa, FL which is operated locally by the Brevard County Sheriff's Office and holds inmates awaiting trial or sentencing or both. Most of the sentenced inmates are here for less than two years. Brevard County accepts inmates from surrounding towns, Cocoa Police Department, and the US Marshal's Service.

New detainees arrive at the jail regularly, with some being released on bail, placed under pretrial services caseloads, supervised by probation agencies, or released on recognizance with a court appearance agreement. Those who are not released await their court appearances at the jail, receiving accommodations including bedding and meals. You can see all the arrest records for Florida here.

The Brevard County Jail Complex, owned and maintained by Brevard County and operated by the Sheriff, is accredited through the Florida Corrections Accreditation Commission. Originally opened in 1986 with 386 beds, the Jail Complex now routinely houses over 1,600 inmates daily. Its facilities include a Booking area, Housing areas, an Infirmary, a Kitchen, a Laundry facility, Courtrooms, Visiting areas, Recreation areas, and office/support locations. In addition to the main jail, there are four tent housing structures, an annex facility, and a mental health/medical unit, bringing the total rated capacity to 1,849 beds.

Overcrowding issues have led to a Federal Lawsuit since 1983, prompting various attempts by the Board of County Commissioners to expand the jail through Voter Referendums in the 1980s, 1990s, and 2002. However, these referendums were unsuccessful in securing additional tax funding for expansion. In 2005, the Sheriff's Office proposed a 700-bed expansion plan, incorporating cost-saving measures like the use of Sprung tents. This proposal was approved by the Board of County Commissioners, aiming to save taxpayers over 30 million dollars compared to conventional construction methods.

The expansion plan included four separate 100-bed Sprung tent-like structures, a new Medical/Mental Health Dormitory for 300 inmates, conversion of a Jail Annex to a Women’s Jail, a new Laundry/Search Facility, an expanded Booking area, and an expanded Food Services area. These construction projects have been completed, addressing overcrowding concerns and improving the capacity and efficiency of the Brevard County Jail Complex.
