The current Florida State Prison was once known as the East Unit and was constructed in 1961 with the new death chamber. It was part of what is now known as Union Correctional Institution, and combined they were the original Florida State Prison. In 1973 the title Florida State Prison was transferred to the East Unit and was designated as a standalone facility and the old “Flat Top” became Union Correctional Institution.
