Located at 406 N High St in Anamosa, IA, ASP carefully assigns inmates based on their custody level, considering factors like criminal history. ASP offers diverse educational and vocational programs aimed at equipping offenders for successful reintegration into society and reducing recidivism. Through these initiatives, inmates gain skills and confidence, fostering personal growth and resilience.

The ASP is a maximum/medium security institution accommodating approximately 950 offenders, offering diverse programs for academic and vocational skill development. Through a contract with Kirkwood Community College, offenders can pursue educational opportunities such as adult literacy, HiSET certification, or Associate of Arts degrees. Iowa Prison Industries provides job skills training in various fields like License Plates, Custom Woodworking, and Braille Transcription, among others.

ASP also offers apprenticeships recognized by the US Department of Labor and cognitive-based programming delivered by counseling staff. The Luster Heights Work Camp, a satellite facility, houses 85 inmates in the Yellow River State Forest, providing a substance abuse program licensed by the Iowa Department of Public Health. Inmates here work for the Iowa Department of Natural Resources and engage in community service projects.

Notable former inmates housed at ASP include serial killers John Wayne Gacy and Robert Hansen, despite their convictions being unrelated to murder. Surprisingly, the prison hosts a museum dedicated to its history, open to the public just outside its walls.

Inmate Locator

ASP maintains a database of current inmates and their locations within the system. To locate an inmate, begin by using the DOC locator tool, which requires entering the first three letters of the inmate's first and last name, allowing for variations in spelling.

If unable to locate the desired information through free resources, users may opt to use the Arrest Record Search, which requires payment. While this option incurs a small fee, it provides access to the most up-to-date data available.
