INTRO
If your loved one is approaching release from an Idaho state prison, the Idaho Department of Correction operates its own network of Community Reentry Centers - what most states call halfway houses - directly, without contracting to private operators. IDOC runs five CRCs statewide, with a sixth in Pocatello expected to open in Fall 2026.
Idaho's CRC system is exclusively for minimum custody inmates within 18 months of release. The CRC philosophy centers on work release: residents work in the community during the day, returning to the center at night while building employment history, completing treatment programming, and preparing for permanent community placement.
For transitional housing beyond the CRCs - particularly for parolees who need short-term community housing rather than a facility bed - IDOC partners with GEO Reentry Services to maintain a Statewide Transitional Housing Provider Network. These are private and nonprofit community providers organized under a three-tiered standards system, offering stays of 30-60 days. IDOC Reentry Specialists provide 90 days of post-release support to help individuals navigate these resources.
For federal inmates, Idaho falls under BOP Residential Reentry Management San Francisco, the same office covering Alaska, Arizona, California, Hawaii, Nevada, Oregon, and Washington.
IDOC'S FIVE COMMUNITY REENTRY CENTERS
IDOC operates five CRCs, all under direct IDOC management:
East Boise CRC (Boise) - 148 beds, all female. Idaho's oldest CRC, opened 1980, became women-only in 1989. The only women's CRC in the state.
Treasure Valley CRC (Boise) - 108 beds, male. Opened 2004, Boise area.
Nampa CRC (Nampa) - 115 beds, male. Canyon County, opened 1985. Serves the western Idaho corridor outside Boise.
Idaho Falls CRC (Idaho Falls) - 112 beds, male. Eastern Idaho, opened 1996. Address: 3955 Bombardier Ave, Idaho Falls, ID 83402.
Twin Falls CRC (Twin Falls) - 160 beds, male. Newest existing CRC, opened 2020. Address: 616 Washington St. South, Twin Falls, ID 83301 / (208) 644-7900. The largest existing CRC.
POCATELLO CRC - OPENING FALL 2026
IDOC broke ground on a new Community Reentry Center in Pocatello under a 2022 Idaho Legislature appropriation and Governor Little's public safety initiative. When complete in Fall 2026, the Pocatello CRC will add 100 male minimum custody beds - addressing the lack of a CRC serving southeastern Idaho. Families of men at the South Idaho Correctional Institution or nearby facilities should monitor IDOC's website for the opening announcement.
GEO REENTRY AND THE TRANSITIONAL HOUSING NETWORK
For the short-term housing needs of parolees who don't qualify for or need a CRC bed, IDOC partners with GEO Reentry Services to manage a Statewide Transitional Housing Provider Network of private and nonprofit community providers. Stays typically run 30-60 days while IDOC determines ongoing release conditions.
GEO Reentry also operates Connection and Intervention Stations at key locations statewide - community-based drop-in points offering cognitive behavioral programs for people on probation and parole. These are not residential but are valuable for families tracking available services.
Contact IDOC Reentry Services at idoc.idaho.gov for referrals to the transitional housing network.
SEX OFFENDER RESTRICTIONS IN IDAHO
Idaho Code §18-8329 prohibits registered sex offenders from residing within 500 feet of a school, daycare, or playground. Additional restrictions prevent residence within 1,000 feet of a minor victim. IDOC maintains a dedicated sex offender housing subcommittee within its Statewide Transitional Housing Committee. Contact IDOC Probation and Parole for sex offender placement options.
