At IL DOC - Greene County Work Camp's state corrections facility, well-behaved inmates can join a work release program, getting regular jobs in the public sector during the day. Depending on the rules, they might work weekdays and go home at night, serving their sentences only on weekends. Some stay in halfway houses or at home when they're not working. As they get closer to getting out, they might switch to reintegration programs and could even get full-time jobs when they are released.

This program has perks like better chances of finding a job after getting out, finding work faster, making more money afterward, and being less likely to go back to jail. Greene Co Work Camp wants to help inmates succeed in getting back into society.

The Greene County Work Camp has undergone significant transformations in its operational approach over the years, reflecting shifts in correctional programming and priorities. Initially established as the Impact Incarceration Program (IIP), resembling a military-style boot camp, it aimed to provide a rigorous rehabilitative experience for eligible inmates. Opening its doors in March 1993, the IIP emphasized discipline, physical fitness, and character development, offering participants the chance to earn sentence reductions through program completion.

In February 2004, responding to changing needs and goals in corrections, the Greene County Work Camp adapted its focus to accommodate a wider range of inmates while maintaining strict eligibility standards. Rebranded as a work camp, it expanded its capacity to house up to 200 individuals meeting specific criteria. Emphasizing vocational training and community involvement, the camp enabled inmates to acquire job skills and contribute positively to society through participation in community work crews.

Subsequent years saw further adjustments to the facility's operational model. In June 2013, the Greene County Impact Incarceration Program was reinstated in its original boot camp format, reintegrating military-style discipline and structure into its rehabilitative approach. Meanwhile, the work camp component ceased operations in July 2013, with the focus shifting back to the intensive programming characteristic of the IIP.

By June 2014, the Greene County Impact Incarceration Program had transitioned once more, exclusively resuming its role as a work camp. While discontinuing the military-style boot camp model, the facility continued to offer vocational opportunities and engage inmates in community work crews, fostering productive skill development and reintegration readiness.

Throughout its various evolutions, the Greene County Work Camp has remained dedicated to promoting rehabilitation, responsibility, and positive behavior among its inmate population. Programs such as vocational training, volunteer services, leisure activities, and individual counseling contribute to a supportive and structured environment aimed at facilitating successful reentry into society upon release.
