ICE Detention Facilities in Illinois: Locations and Family Guide

Illinois ICE detention facilities include the Broadview Processing Center, Jerome Combs Detention Center (Kankakee), Midwest Regional Reception Center, Clay County Jail, and Jefferson County Justice Center. Updated June 2026.

Illinois's ICE detention network changed dramatically starting in September 2025 when Operation Midway Blitz - one of the largest immigration enforcement operations in recent U.S. history - swept through the Chicago metropolitan area and beyond. The Broadview Processing Center in Broadview, Illinois became the primary intake and processing point for thousands of people arrested in the Chicago region. Illinois state law bars ICE from using state prisons or county jails for civil immigration detention, making Broadview and a small number of county facilities under separate federal contracts the main Illinois sites. Most people arrested in Illinois are transferred out of state within days - primarily to Indiana, Wisconsin, Michigan, and Kentucky. The Chicago Field Office covers Illinois, Indiana, Wisconsin, Missouri, Kentucky, and Kansas. Bond is posted at one ERO location in Chicago. ICE detention is civil, not criminal. A person held in ICE detention has not been convicted of a crime. Last verified: June 2026.

Step 1: Find Your Family Member

ICE Online Detainee Locator: locator.ice.gov

You need the person's full legal name, date of birth, and country of birth - OR their A-Number (Alien Registration Number). Illinois detainees are frequently transferred to out-of-state facilities within days of arrest. The ICE locator system has experienced delays updating during high-volume enforcement periods - allow 24-72 hours if a newly arrested person is not appearing.

Illinois ICE Detention Facilities - As of June 2026

Illinois has a small number of in-state ICE detention facilities due to state law barring use of state prisons and county jails for civil immigration detention. Most people arrested in Illinois are quickly transferred to detention facilities in neighboring states, particularly Indiana (Miami Correctional Facility in Bunker Hill), Wisconsin (Dodge County Jail), Michigan (North Lake Correctional Facility), and Kentucky. Always use the ICE Detainee Locator (locator.ice.gov) first before traveling to any Illinois facility.

Primary Processing Facility - ICE-Owned

Broadview Processing Center - Broadview (Cook County)

Address: 1930 Beach Street, Broadview, IL 60155 | Detainee locator email: detentionbroadview-ins@ice.dhs.gov | Field Office: chi-ero-detained@ice.dhs.gov | (312) 347-2400 | Operator: ICE (government-owned and operated) | Type: Processing Center | Demographics: Female/Male

Broadview Processing Center in Broadview (a western suburb of Chicago, Cook County) is the primary ICE intake and processing facility for the Chicago region. Owned and operated by ICE - not a private contractor. The facility has been an immigration-related site since 2006. Broadview handles short-term processing; most detainees are transferred to longer-term facilities in other states within days.

Broadview became the center of national attention during Operation Midway Blitz (September 2025 onward), when ICE and CBP conducted widespread arrests across the Chicago metropolitan area. The facility was severely overcrowded during peak enforcement periods - one detainee testified to being held in a room with 150 others despite a posted capacity of 86 - and conditions including inadequate food, water, hygiene, and legal access were documented by members of Congress, the ACLU, and courts. A federal court (Judge Robert Gettleman, Northern District of Illinois) issued orders mandating minimum conditions standards including private attorney phone calls. The Broadview mayor formally demanded closure of the facility and reimbursement for operational costs in March 2026.

Illinois state law bars ICE from using state prisons or county jails for civil immigration enforcement, making Broadview one of the only processing points in the region. Detention beds for women are limited in Illinois; female detainees are commonly transferred to Kentucky. Transgender detainees have been sent to Denver. The facility previously operated Monday through Friday, 9 AM to some extent, but operational hours changed significantly during Operation Midway Blitz.

VOLATILE - conditions, capacity, and visiting procedures at Broadview have changed frequently and remain contested as of June 2026. Verify current conditions and visiting procedures before traveling by calling the Chicago ERO (312) 347-2400 or emailing detentionbroadview-ins@ice.dhs.gov. Out-of-State Transfers from Illinois

Due to Illinois state law barring civil immigration detention in state and county facilities, the vast majority of people arrested in Illinois are transferred to facilities in neighboring states within days of processing at Broadview. Primary out-of-state destinations documented during and after Operation Midway Blitz include:

Indiana: Miami Correctional Facility, Bunker Hill (primary destination documented by Rep. Underwood)

Wisconsin: Dodge County Jail, Juneau (Dodge Detention Facility - Chicago Field Office detention unit)

Michigan: North Lake Correctional Facility (private, re-opened June 2025 as ICE jail)

Kentucky: Primary destination for female detainees from the Chicago region

Colorado (Denver area): Documented transfer destination for transgender detainees

Always check the ICE Detainee Locator (locator.ice.gov) to find current facility. Transfers happen rapidly and often with no family notification.

Operation Midway Blitz - Context for Families

Operation Midway Blitz began September 9, 2025, involving ICE Enforcement and Removal Operations (ERO), Customs and Border Protection (CBP), U.S. Marshals, DEA, and ATF. The operation covered the entire state of Illinois and neighboring Lake County, Indiana. ICE used a naval base as a staging area. Within the first two weeks, over 550 people were reported arrested. The Chicago Tribune won a Pulitzer Prize for Local Reporting in 2026 for its coverage.

Key legal developments: A federal judge (Robert Gettleman, Northern District of Illinois) issued orders mandating minimum conditions at Broadview - including private attorney phone calls, adequate food, water, and bedding. The 'Broadview Six' - six defendants including political candidate Kat Abughazaleh - were charged in October 2025 with hindering a federal agent but all charges were dismissed with prejudice in May 2026 after grand jury irregularities were revealed. ICE and Border Patrol have continued enforcement activity in Illinois since the formal peak of the operation ended in November 2025.
