INTRO
Illinois runs the largest prison system in the Midwest - approximately 28,000 people across 28 facilities spread from Chicago to southern Illinois. The Illinois Department of Corrections (IDOC) operates a centralized visitation system through GTL's platform, where every visitor must register, complete the Prospective Visitor Interview Form, and schedule at least seven days in advance.
The constraint that surprises most Illinois families is the visit frequency rule: incarcerated people in general population are permitted five visits per calendar month, but only one of those five may occur on a weekend. Saturday and Sunday combined count as a single weekend allowance. Families who work Monday through Friday and can only visit on weekends are limited to one visit per month. Understanding this before you try to schedule is critical.
Illinois does not use commercial bail bonds - the state eliminated cash bail in 2023.
GTL REGISTRATION - REQUIRED BEFORE ANY VISIT
All potential visitors must register with GTL at ildoc.gtlvisitme.com before scheduling any visit.
The registration process includes completing the Prospective Visitor Interview Form through GTL. Every visitor must fully complete this form through GTL - even if you have previously completed it in person at a facility. Any omissions on the form will cause delays in processing.
Adults should register themselves first, then add minor children or guardians to their account.
If you have issues registering a minor child, contact GTL customer support at 1-855-208-7349.
Once registered with GTL, you can check your approval status and schedule visits through the platform.
VISITOR APPROVAL - THE APPROVED LIST
All visitors 17 years of age and older must be on the incarcerated person's approved visitation list to be granted a visit. The age threshold is 17 - not 18 - which is one of the lower thresholds in the directory. Children under 17 are exempt from the list requirement and do not need to be separately approved.
Government officials and legal visitors are also exempt from the approved list requirement.
How to get on the list: The incarcerated person is responsible for arranging visits and notifying visitors of their status. To check whether you are on someone's approved list, write a letter to the incarcerated person - IDOC staff cannot and will not tell you over the phone whether you are on a list. This is policy, not discretion.
FORMER OFFENDERS, PAROLEES, AND THOSE WITH PENDING CHARGES
Illinois requires warden-level written approval for anyone with a criminal record to visit - one of the more structured policies in the directory:
Anyone who has been convicted of a criminal offense, has criminal charges pending, is currently on parole, on mandatory supervised release, on probation, or is an ex-incarcerated person may visit only with the written approval of the Chief Administrative Officer (warden).
Parolees who are currently on supervision or mandatory supervised release must have TWO written approvals:
1. Written approval from the Chief Administrative Officer (warden) of the facility
2. Written approval from the incarcerated person's parole agent
Both approvals are required. The parole agent approval alone is not sufficient; the warden's approval alone is not sufficient. Both must be in writing before the visit occurs.
Contact the facility directly to initiate the written approval process. Do not simply show up - approval must be obtained in advance.
SCHEDULING - AT LEAST 7 DAYS IN ADVANCE
All visits must be scheduled online at least seven days before the visit date. Same-day, walk-in, or short-notice visits are not available.
Schedule through GTL at ildoc.gtlvisitme.com.
Warning: The scheduling system times out after 30 minutes of inactivity. If you begin the scheduling process, complete it within 30 minutes or you will need to start over.
IDOC staff cannot verify your list status over the phone - write to the incarcerated person if you need to confirm your approval.
VISIT FREQUENCY - THE WEEKEND LIMIT
This is the rule that creates the most frustration for Illinois families:
Incarcerated people in general population or protective custody are permitted 5 visits per calendar month - with only ONE occurring on any weekend.
What this means in practice:
- If you visit on Saturday, that is your one weekend visit for the month
- You cannot also visit on Sunday of the same weekend - that would be a second weekend visit
- Your remaining four visits must all occur on weekdays (Monday through Friday)
- Families who cannot take weekday time off from work are effectively limited to one visit per month
The Duty Administrative Officer has discretion to alter visiting time limitations in specific circumstances - if your family situation makes weekday visits impossible, contact the facility to discuss options.
IDOC's general policy permits 5 visits per month in standard conditions. Individual facilities may have different scheduling windows - check the specific facility at idoc.illinois.gov under the Facilities section.
VISITING HOURS - VARIES BY FACILITY
Visiting hours vary by facility and security level. IDOC does not publish a single statewide schedule. Each facility's hours are listed on the IDOC website at idoc.illinois.gov under the Facilities section.
General range observed across IDOC facilities: most run visits on weekends and some weekdays, typically in morning and afternoon sessions. Call the specific facility to confirm current hours - facilities may restrict visitation based on safety, security concerns, or lockdowns.
Prospective Visitor Interview Form: on your first visit to any facility, you will be expected to complete this form in person - in addition to completing it through GTL during registration. The in-person form asks many categories of personal information and requires you to explain how you know the incarcerated person.
WHAT YOU CANNOT BRING INTO THE VISITING ROOM
Illinois publishes a consistent prohibited items list across all facilities:
You may not bring into the visiting room:
- Electronic devices of any kind (cell phones, tablets, smart watches, pagers)
- Sunglasses
- Food, drink, or smoking materials
- Currency of any kind
- Packages, purses, bags, sacks, backpacks
- Books or magazines
- Personal keys
- Any items to be passed to the incarcerated person - clothing, jewelry, books, papers, or any other items
What you can bring: your photo ID and the items specifically allowed under IDOC rules. Facilities typically provide lockers for storing personal items during the visit.
Vending machines: available at most facilities. Coins or debit/credit cards are accepted for vending. Paper currency rules vary - check with the specific facility.
DRESS CODE
Illinois does not publish a specific color-prohibition dress code equivalent to California's CCR Section 3174 or Florida's Procedure 601.714. The published standard is: "Dress appropriately for a correctional facility environment."
The practical standard is modesty-based. At a minimum:
- Covered shoulders - no sleeveless or strapless tops
- No revealing, provocative, or see-through clothing
- No clothing resembling inmate or staff uniforms
- No sunglasses in the visiting room
On your first visit, you may be subject to dress code checks alongside the Prospective Visitor Interview Form. Staff have discretion. Dress conservatively.
ID REQUIREMENTS
Visitors must have a current photo ID: driver's license, state ID, or for non-US citizens a current passport, visa, or Matricula consular card. Additionally, visitors must provide documentation containing a date of birth (a second document). Expired IDs are not acceptable.
Visitors must also provide vehicle information upon arrival.
MINOR VISITOR RULES
Children under 17 do not need to be separately approved on the incarcerated person's list - they are exempt from the 17+ approval requirement. Adults who register with GTL should add their minor children or guardians to their account after their own registration is complete.
The Duty Administrative Officer has discretion over conditions specific to minor visitors. Contact the facility for any questions about bringing children under special circumstances.
SEARCHES AND CONTRABAND
All persons, vehicles, and items brought onto state property are subject to search. Failure to submit to a search results in denial, suspension, or restriction of visiting privileges.
Contraband in an IDOC facility is a criminal offense under the Illinois Criminal Code of 1961. Any visitor found in possession of weapons, drugs, or other contraband will be prohibited from visiting and reported to the State Police. Criminal charges may be filed.
Visitors who use the restroom during a visit are subject to search following restroom use. The incarcerated person is also subject to search if they use the restroom during the visit.
