Johnston Co Jail is for County Jail offenders sentenced up to twenty four months.

All prisons and jails have Security or Custody levels depending on the inmate’s classification, sentence, and criminal history. Please review the rules and regulations for County - medium facility.

The Johnston Co Jail is a detention center located at 127 S 2nd St Smithfield, NC which is operated locally by the Johnston County Sheriff's Office and holds inmates awaiting trial or sentencing or both. Most of the sentenced inmates are here for less than two years. Johnston County accepts inmates from surrounding towns, Smithfield Police Department, and the US Marshal's Service.

New detainees arrive at the jail regularly, with some being released on bail, placed under pretrial services caseloads, supervised by probation agencies, or released on recognizance with a court appearance agreement. Those who are not released await their court appearances at the jail, receiving accommodations including bedding and meals. You can see all the arrest records for North Carolina here.

Deposit Kiosk at Johnston County Jail - The deposit kiosk is located in the criminal magistrate lobby outside of the jail. This deposit kiosk is available 24 hours a day for deposits into inmates' trust accounts. Kiosk deposits will post to inmates' accounts immediately.

By Mail - Money may be deposited into the inmate's account by money order and/or certified check sent through the mail. The money order and/or certified check should be made payable in the inmate's full name. The mailing address is P.O. Box 1496, Smithfield, NC 27577. Please address the envelope and money order to the inmate.

Internet - Go to jailatm.com and follow the prompts. You can send any amount, and there are no time restrictions. There are fees for this service, which are listed on the website. They are similar to Western Union fees.

These deposits post to an inmate's account immediately.

Books may only be received in the Johnston County Jail if shipped directly by a publisher or bookstore. Books may only be softcover; no hardback or spiral-bound books allowed and may not contain nudity or sexually suggestive material, gang signs or symbols, drugs or alcohol, or depictions of violence. Newspapers or Magazines may only be received from the publisher (example: subscription). All items received in the Johnston County Jail are subject to inspection. Unauthorized items will be returned to sender by US Postal Service. Any inmate who leaves the Johnston County Jail before a subscription to a newspaper or magazine runs out may gift that subscription to another inmate or staff will donate it to inmates still in custody.

Inmates in the Johnston County Jail may receive up to 5 pictures no larger in size than 5 X 7. Pictures may not contain nudity or any sexually suggestive content, gang signs or symbols, drugs or alcohol, any form of violence or any other offensive content.

Officers and staff of the Johnston County Sheriff’s Office and Jail are not permitted to relay messages to inmates. Please use the mailing address to deliver any messages to inmates. Inmates may purchase phone cards twice weekly or call collect using the phones provided by the jail.

Inmates may only receive a softcover Bible or Koran. Any other necessities or items are available for purchase from our commissary, including a variety of hygiene products, writing materials and snacks. Commissary orders are limited to $40 per week. Calling cards are also available for purchase by an inmate. If you are in possession of an inmate’s prescription medication, you will need to call (919) 989-5035 to receive instructions from our medical staff.

Visitation Information

Johnston County Jail - Visitation

Visitation is held each weekend by appointment only. To schedule an appointment, call (919) 989-5045 on Tuesday or Wednesday between the hours of 10 am – 2 pm.

Appointments are based on a “first-come, first-serve” basis. Be prepared with the names of all people who will be visiting.

  • Only 4 people may visit an inmate during an appointment.
  • Each inmate is allowed one 15 minute appointment per week.
  • Each person registering to visit that is 16 years of age or older must have a valid ID or driver’s license issued by the DMV and be accompanied by an adult age 18 years or older.
