Located at 3001 W Hwy 146 in LaGrange, KY, KSR carefully assigns inmates based on their custody level, considering factors like criminal history. KSR offers diverse educational and vocational programs aimed at equipping offenders for successful reintegration into society and reducing recidivism. Through these initiatives, inmates gain skills and confidence, fostering personal growth and resilience.

The KSR, situated in LaGrange, approximately 30 miles northeast of Louisville, operates as a medium security facility overseen by the Kentucky Justice Cabinet, Department of Corrections, with a capacity of 1,051 beds.

Established as the third prison in Kentucky in the late 1930s, KSR's inception was facilitated by the appropriation of state and federal funds. Embracing innovative correctional practices, the prison was designed with open-wing dormitories instead of individual cells, aiming to provide ample space and encourage rehabilitation.

The physical layout of KSR has remained largely unchanged since its construction, featuring a 12-story administration building housing key staff offices, medical facilities, and correctional staff living quarters. The institution maintains various housing units, including dormitories, a correctional psychiatric treatment unit, a nursing care facility, and specialized medical wings.

Central to KSR's mission is its role as a specialized institution providing extensive mental health and medical services to inmates. The Medical Department offers on-site treatments such as chemotherapy and dialysis, coordinates routine and emergency medical and dental care, and facilitates medical services from external providers.

In addition to medical facilities, KSR houses various amenities and support structures, including an Academic/Vocational School, Gymnasium, Chapel, Dining Facility, and Correctional Industries. The institution's infrastructure is designed to facilitate a comprehensive approach to inmate rehabilitation and support services.

In the early 1980s, KSR faced legal challenges regarding inmate living conditions, resulting in a Federal Consent Decree. Substantial efforts were made to comply with the decree, leading to significant improvements in facilities and operations, culminating in a ruling of substantial compliance from Chief Judge Edward Johnstone in 1987.

To ensure efficient service delivery, KSR is organized into specialized departments overseen by Deputy Wardens responsible for administration and management. These departments collaborate with external agencies such as the Division of Mental Health, the Kentucky Community and Technical College System, and Correctional Industries to provide comprehensive support to inmates.

With 325 funded positions and an additional 130 employees from collaborating agencies, KSR operates as a vital component of Kentucky's correctional system, striving to fulfill its mission of rehabilitation and inmate support while maintaining compliance with legal standards and promoting public safety.

If unable to locate the desired information through free resources, users may opt to use the Arrest Record Search, which requires payment. While this option incurs a small fee, it provides access to the most up-to-date data available.
