Located at 99 Loring Dr in Framingham, MA, MCI-Framingham carefully assigns inmates based on their custody level, considering factors like criminal history. MCI-Framingham offers diverse educational and vocational programs aimed at equipping offenders for successful reintegration into society and reducing recidivism. Through these initiatives, inmates gain skills and confidence, fostering personal growth and resilience.
MCI-Framingham, located twenty-two miles west of Boston, is a medium-security state correctional facility specifically for female inmates. It holds a unique place as the oldest operating female correctional institution in the United States and serves as the Massachusetts Department of Correction's primary institution for female offenders. The facility accommodates women of various classification levels, including those serving state sentences, county offenders, and those awaiting trial. Within its compound, MCI-Framingham comprises seven housing units and a two-story modular unit with over 120 beds. Additionally, it houses a health service unit and repurposes its old administration building for inmate programming. The Betty Cole Smith Building serves multiple purposes, including inmate visiting, admissions processing, administrative offices, and housing units.
In addition to meeting medium-security needs, MCI-Framingham offers an array of programs and treatments catering to mental health, medical care, substance abuse, and family services. It also provides educational opportunities, access to a library, religious services, recreational activities, and community service programs like the National Education for Assistant Dog Services. Vocational programs such as cosmetology, culinary services, and building trades are also available. Through these resources, female offenders can engage in rehabilitation, transfer to facilities like the South Middlesex Correctional Center as part of the classification process, and ultimately reintegrate into the community.
