Located at 1960 US Hwy 41 S in Marquette, MI, MBP carefully assigns inmates based on their custody level, considering factors like criminal history. MBP offers diverse educational and vocational programs aimed at equipping offenders for successful reintegration into society and reducing recidivism. Through these initiatives, inmates gain skills and confidence, fostering personal growth and resilience.

The MBP, authorized by the Michigan State Legislature in 1885, stands as a historic correctional institution situated on the shores of Lake Superior. The property, generously bestowed by the Marquette Businessmen's Association, was transformed into the prison, which was completed in 1889 at a cost of less than $200,000.

Comprising both Level V and Secure Level I sections, the 580 capacity state prison features various housing units tailored to different security levels. The Level V portion encompasses four general population housing units and two administrative segregation housing units. In contrast, the Secure Level I section includes four housing units located outside the concrete wall surrounding Level V.

Programming at the Marquette Branch Prison is comprehensive, aiming to address educational, vocational, behavioral, and mental health needs. Adult Basic Education, Special Education, General Education Development, Employment Readiness, and Building Trades are among the educational opportunities provided. The facility also offers outpatient Substance Abuse and Advanced Substance Abuse treatment, along with cognitive behavioral programs like Thinking for Change, Violence Prevention Program, and Michigan Domestic Violence Program (MiDVP). Mental health services are available for prisoners requiring outpatient mental health care. Additionally, prisoners can engage in activities such as utilizing the law library, general library, and hobby craft. Religious programs, overseen by the Chaplain, involve local clergy, community volunteers, and laypeople.

As the designated Prisoner Reentry/Offender Success Facility for Michigan's Upper Peninsula, the Marquette Branch Prison supports reintegration efforts for prisoners from all 15 counties in the region. In addition to cognitive restructuring programming, the facility offers In-Reach services encompassing employment services, transportation assistance, housing workshops, Fast Track Release programming, and opportunities for engagement with Field Operations Administration (FOA) Field Agents, Community Resource Specialists, Treatment Specialists, faith-based groups, and family reunification initiatives.
