The facility in Tittabawassee Township, Saginaw County, opened in 1993 on a spacious 142-acre site, with the facility itself occupying about 1,500 prisoners on 43 acres. Comprising 11 main buildings totaling approximately 303,850 square feet, the facility accommodates male inmates aged 18 and older across Security Levels I, II, and IV.
The facility features a diverse range of housing units, including three Level II buildings, three Level IV buildings, and one Level I building. Additionally, there are dedicated buildings for education, programs, administration, food service, healthcare, and maintenance.
Notably, the Level II housing units house three separate dog programs: Paws With A Cause, Blue Star Dog Program, and Iron Paws. These programs collaborate with external agencies to provide specialized training and placement or community adoption.
Academic programming at the facility encompasses Special Education, General Education Development completion, Adult Basic Education, and Vocational Education, alongside life-role competency programs and a Veterans' Unit. As a designated ReEntry In-Reach facility, it emphasizes facilitating successful transitions back into the community. Religious and library services, including law and general libraries, are offered by both institution staff and community volunteers.
On-site medical care covers routine needs, with major emergencies addressed at local hospitals or the Duane L. Waters Health Care Center in Jackson.
Security measures are robust, featuring a buffer fence, double chain-link fences, razor-ribbon wire, electronic detection systems, an armed patrol vehicle, and gun towers to ensure the safety and security of staff and inmates.
SRF maintains a database of current inmates and their locations within the system. To locate an inmate, begin by using the DOC locator tool, which requires entering the first three letters of the inmate's first and last name, allowing for variations in spelling.
If unable to locate the desired information through free resources, users may opt to use the Arrest Record Search, which requires payment. While this option incurs a small fee, it provides access to the most up-to-date data available.
