Catawba Correctional Center, situated in Newton, North Carolina, is a minimum custody facility accommodating 246 adult males. Established as one of the 61 field unit prisons renovated or built during the 1930s to house road-working inmates, Catawba has undergone significant transformations over the years to enhance its functionality and living conditions.

The prison's original housing unit, featuring two dormitories, underwent renovation in the mid-1980s, which included improvements such as lowered ceilings, installation of centralized heating and air circulation units, and enhanced lighting. Additional modular dormitories were incorporated in 1978, later replaced with a new modular in 1998. Legislative initiatives further expanded the facility, with the construction of an additional 128-bed dormitory as part of the South Piedmont Consent Decree, a testament to ongoing efforts to improve inmate accommodations.

Inmates housed at Catawba Correctional Center benefit from a range of transitional programs aimed at facilitating their reintegration into society upon release. These programs, including Male Nurturing, Chaplaincy Re-entry Program, DACDP Intermediate Treatment, GED tutoring, and testing, play a crucial role in preparing inmates for life beyond incarceration. Support groups such as NA and AA are also available to aid in the rehabilitation process.

A cornerstone of the prison's rehabilitation efforts is the Work Release program, which allows inmates to gain employment with private sector employers, fostering a sense of responsibility and providing a financial foundation for their eventual release. Approximately 50 inmates participate in this program, enabling them to support their families, pay restitution, and transition back into the community with valuable work experience.

Inmates at Catawba are assigned to a variety of jobs within the facility, ranging from kitchen duties to janitorial work and maintenance tasks. Some inmates also engage in vocational training programs offered by Catawba Valley Community College, equipping them with valuable skills for future employment opportunities.

Educational courses, including GED preparation, are available to inmates seeking to further their academic credentials during their incarceration. These initiatives, coupled with re-entry programs and male nurturing courses, contribute to the holistic rehabilitation of inmates and their successful reintegration into society upon release.

Overall, Catawba Correctional Center stands as a testament to ongoing efforts to provide inmates with the tools and resources necessary to transition from prison life to productive members of society, reflecting a commitment to rehabilitation and community safety.

Visitation Information

Visits to NCDPS offenders are by appointment only. Call the prison where the offender is housed to schedule an appointment. Visitors should call the prison the day before a scheduled visit to confirm the facility's visitation status. Also, video visitation now is available at most but not all prisons, so family and friends may be able to do a virtual visit if they prefer. Call the prison for additional information on video visitation at the facility.
Visitation by family and friends is encouraged and can make a positive difference during an offender's time in prison. Prison staff understand the importance of offenders maintaining contact with their family and friends. However, offenders can not be assigned to specific facilities within the prison system for the convenience of visitation.

For more information regarding prisons and visitation, please read the Handbook for Family and Friends of Offenders.
The increased safety and security measures are implemented to address, and ultimately eliminate, the introduction of contraband into state prisons. Any refusal to comply with all search procedures will result in the denial of entrance into the facility. Cell phones are considered contraband and are prohibited from all prison facilities. Appropriate attire is required.

Ask The Inmate

Ask a former inmate questions at no charge. The inmate answering has spent considerable time in the federal prison system, state and county jails, and in a prison that was run by the private prison entity CCA.
