Maury Correctional Institution, located near Hookerton, North Carolina, in Greene County, houses adult male offenders in close and medium custody. It is a high-security facility, incarcerating individuals convicted of serious, often violent crimes or those with a history of non-compliance with facility rules.

The prison provides specialized housing units catering to various offender populations, including residential mental health, outpatient mental health, military veterans, chronic medical, restrictive housing, and a therapeutic diversion unit.

Inmates are segregated into four distinct units based on their needs and behaviors. The Red unit accommodates inmates in the mental health program or segregation, while the Blue unit caters to those with medical issues. The Green units house general population inmates eligible for programs and work assignments, whereas the Gray Unit is designated for the most dangerous inmates requiring maximum control.

Maury Correctional Institution offers a range of educational opportunities, including classes for earning a GED and obtaining adult basic education. Additionally, inmates have access to substance abuse treatment and receive medical, mental health, and dental services while incarcerated.

Opened in April 2006, Maury Correctional Institution was the fourth among six 1000-bed facilities established before 2008. It later expanded with the completion of a 504-bed medium-custody unit.

Operated under the unit management system, the facility comprises six separate units, each serving specific inmate populations. The Green Unit houses inmates enrolled in the residential mental health program, outpatient mental health regular population, and Veteran's dorm regular population. In contrast, the Blue Unit accommodates regular population inmates and those with chronic medical issues. The Red Unit is designated for inmates in Restrictive Housing and regular population, while the Gray Unit houses inmates in the Therapeutic Diversion Unit (TDU) and those requiring maximum control.

Inmates in the regular population units have opportunities to participate in various work assignments and programs aimed at facilitating their reintegration into the community upon release. Staff at Maury Correctional Institution includes correctional officers, food service personnel, medical and mental health professionals, maintenance workers, and administrative staff.

Visitation Information

Visits to NCDPS offenders are by appointment only. Call the prison where the offender is housed to schedule an appointment. Visitors should call the prison the day before a scheduled visit to confirm the facility's visitation status. Also, video visitation now is available at most but not all prisons, so family and friends may be able to do a virtual visit if they prefer. Call the prison for additional information on video visitation at the facility.
Visitation by family and friends is encouraged and can make a positive difference during an offender's time in prison. Prison staff understand the importance of offenders maintaining contact with their family and friends. However, offenders can not be assigned to specific facilities within the prison system for the convenience of visitation.

For more information regarding prisons and visitation, please read the Handbook for Family and Friends of Offenders.
The increased safety and security measures are implemented to address, and ultimately eliminate, the introduction of contraband into state prisons. Any refusal to comply with all search procedures will result in the denial of entrance into the facility. Cell phones are considered contraband and are prohibited from all prison facilities. Appropriate attire is required.

The inmate answering has spent considerable time in the federal prison system, state and county jails, and in a prison that was run by the private prison entity CCA.
