How to Send Money to an Inmate in New Jersey

How to deposit money to a New Jersey DOC or county jail inmate. JPay ended July 2025 - ViaPath ConnectNetwork is now the NJDOC vendor, fees reduced 37%, new deposit slip required, and county jail differences.

If someone you love is locked up in New Jersey, getting money into their account covers commissary - food, hygiene, phone time, writing supplies - and keeps the connection alive. New Jersey's state prison system made a significant vendor change in 2025: JPay is no longer accepted for trust account deposits as of July 31, 2025. The current and only authorized deposit platform for NJDOC state prisons is ViaPath Technologies, accessible through ConnectNetwork. Anyone still trying to deposit through JPay for a New Jersey state prison is using an inactive system - the money will not reach the account.

New Jersey splits adult custody into two systems: the New Jersey Department of Corrections (NJDOC) for state sentences, and county jails operated by county sheriffs or county corrections departments. New Jersey has 21 counties, each with its own jail system.

State prisons: NJDOC and ViaPath/ConnectNetwork

If your person is in an NJDOC state facility, the trust account deposit provider is ViaPath Technologies, accessed through ConnectNetwork.

Online through ConnectNetwork - go to connectnetwork.com, create an account or log in, search for your person, and deposit using a credit or debit card. Available 24 hours a day.

By mobile app - the ViaPath mobile app supports deposits through ConnectNetwork with the same features as the website.

By phone - call ConnectNetwork/ViaPath for phone deposits. Same fee structure.

By money order - download the ViaPath Technologies Trust Account Money Order Payments deposit slip from the NJDOC website at nj.gov/corrections/pages/viapath.html. Complete the slip and mail it with the money order to the address on the deposit slip. The old JPay money order address (P.O. Box 170770, Hialeah FL 33017) is no longer active for NJDOC trust account deposits.

Fee schedule (effective April 30, 2025)

Through this transition, NJDOC reduced money transfer fees by an average of 37 percent compared to the previous JPay rates. The current fee schedule for ViaPath deposits (app, web, or phone):

$0.01 to $9.99 - $0.90 fee

$10.00 to $19.99 - $1.75 fee

$20.00 to $99.99 - $5.95 fee

$100.00 to $199.99 - $6.95 fee

$200.00 to $300.00 - $7.95 fee

What happened to JPay for New Jersey state prisons

JPay began transitioning out as the NJDOC money transfer provider on March 24, 2025, when ViaPath/ConnectNetwork was introduced for deposits. JPay fully stopped accepting deposits for NJDOC trust accounts on July 31, 2025. JPay is no longer an authorized deposit method for New Jersey state prisons.

This transition does not affect the JPay Media Account, which still exists separately - trust fund transfers to the JPay Media Account remain available through the new ViaPath platform.

What the trust account can be used for

Funds deposited to an NJDOC incarcerated person's trust account can be used for: commissary purchases, phone calls, business remits (publications, gifts, donations), participation in incentive programs, and transfers to the JPay Media Account.

Messaging, photos, and the tablet system are separate

NJDOC is deploying ViaPath secure tablets to eligible incarcerated individuals across all state facilities in 2025 and 2026. These devices are NJDOC property and are loaned to inmates at no cost. Free features include facility notices, educational resources, the law library, and other approved services.

For messaging and family communication, families use GettingOut (gettingout.com) - a different ViaPath platform from ConnectNetwork. Families create a GettingOut account and send a contact request; the incarcerated person must accept. Funds added to a GettingOut Friends and Family messaging account can only be used for messages and photos - they are not the same as trust fund deposits at ConnectNetwork.

Account creation note: the same ViaPath login credentials work across both ConnectNetwork and GettingOut, so only one account is needed.

Phone calls reduced in 2025

As of May 1, 2025, domestic phone call rates from NJDOC state facilities are $0.034 per minute, following a 22 percent rate reduction announced on April 22, 2025.

The IPIN system

New Jersey uses an Individual Personal Identification Number (IPIN) system for incarcerated individuals. The IPIN functions as the person's identification number and is required for ConnectNetwork deposits. Find it using the NJDOC Offender Search at nj.gov/corrections.

County jails: vendor varies by county

New Jersey has 21 counties, each with its own county jail or correctional facility operated by the county government. County jails operate independently from NJDOC and set their own deposit vendors.

Bergen County Jail (Hackensack), at 160 South River Street, uses ConnectNetwork for trust fund deposits - the same ViaPath platform as NJDOC state prisons. Main phone: 201-336-3500.

Essex County Correctional Facility (Newark), at 354 Doremus Avenue, accepts lobby kiosk deposits and money orders. Access Securepak handles commissary packages. Main phone: 973-274-7500.

Ocean County Jail (Toms River) uses ConnectNetwork for deposit and visitation scheduling. Main phone: 732-244-2121.

Hudson County Adult Correctional Center (Kearny) has its own deposit process. For questions call 201-395-5600 ext. 5085.

Across New Jersey's 21 county jails, ConnectNetwork/GTL is widely used, but some jails use Access Corrections or their own systems. The only reliable way to find the current vendor for a specific New Jersey county jail is to check that county's website or call the facility directly.

Accounts do not transfer between vendors. When your person moves from a county jail to an NJDOC state prison, the county account stays with the county vendor. You set up new deposits through ConnectNetwork using the IPIN.

Federal custody in New Jersey

If your person is in federal Bureau of Prisons custody in New Jersey - including FCI Fort Dix, FCI Fairton, or the federal detention center in Philadelphia - deposits go through the BOP Trust Fund via Western Union, MoneyGram at retail, or online at bop.gov. You need the eight-digit BOP register number. Do not use NJDOC deposit methods for federal inmates.
