INTRO
New Jersey's Department of Corrections (NJDOC) operates 11 state correctional facilities - including facilities specifically designed for sex offenders, women, and special treatment populations. The NJDOC's statewide visitation guidelines are published on nj.gov/corrections and apply to all state facilities, with facility-specific schedules and session structures layered on top.
Two things set New Jersey apart from most states in the directory. First, all persons must be on the approved visit list - adults and minors alike. Most states require only adults to be approved in advance; New Jersey requires minors to be pre-approved as well. Second, the dress code explicitly prohibits four specific colors: khaki, orange, gray, and camouflage - one of the broadest color prohibition sets in the directory alongside New Jersey's specific call-out of cargo-style pants and Heelys (shoes with wheels).
New Jersey uses commercial bail bonds - bail_banned = false.
VISITOR APPROVAL - ALL PERSONS INCLUDING MINORS
All persons - adults and minors - must be on the incarcerated person's approved visit list before scheduling any visit. This is a published NJDOC statewide requirement and is more inclusive than most states, which only require adults to be pre-approved.
The incarcerated person is responsible for submitting a visitor list to the facility. Prospective visitors contact the incarcerated person to initiate the process. Background checks are conducted.
Minors under 18: must be accompanied by an adult relative who is responsible for obtaining written parental consent. Even with that adult present, the minor must also be on the approved list.
Ex-offenders and parolees: NJDOC's prohibited acts list includes: "visitor is confirmed as an ex-offender or current parolee and did not disclose this information prior to being approved as a visitor." Disclosure is required on the application. Non-disclosure is grounds for visit cancellation and potential suspension of visiting privileges.
Special visits: may be granted for infrequent visitors traveling a long distance, to visit a hospitalized incarcerated person, for official-capacity visits, or for clergy. Only the facility administrator may approve special visits.
SCHEDULING - 48 HOURS IN ADVANCE, MON-THU CALLS ONLY
All visits to NJDOC facilities are by appointment only and must be scheduled at least 48 hours in advance.
Scheduling calls: Monday through Thursday, 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM. If your call is not answered or the line is busy, call back. Do not call on Fridays, weekends, or holidays - NJDOC's scheduling window is Monday through Thursday only.
This is a significant operational constraint: if you want to visit on Saturday, your deadline to call is Thursday by 4:00 PM. If you miss Thursday's call window, you cannot schedule a Saturday visit.
Video visits: also require 48 hours advance notice. Video visits are NOT available on weekends or holidays - weekday scheduling only through ViaPath.
