While incarcerated, reading is often the best use of time. Please note that books and magazines, puzzles, and word searches ordered for inmates must come directly from the publisher. This policy ensures that the items are new, untampered, and comply with the facility's regulations. Prisons and jails enforce this rule to prevent the introduction of contraband or prohibited materials. By restricting orders to publishers, the facility can better maintain security and control over the content entering the institution. Any books or magazines not received directly from the publisher will be rejected and not delivered to the inmate. You may, however, send letters and selfies to inmates with this easy-to-use app, packages starting at only $8.00.
The Northeast New Mexico Correctional Facility (NENMCF) in Clayton, New Mexico, is a state-operated prison under the New Mexico Corrections Department, not a GEO Group facility. The prison was previously associated with private operation, but New Mexico assumed control of the Clayton facility in 2019, and it is now listed among NMCD’s state-operated institutions. Located in rural Union County near the Texas and Oklahoma panhandles, the facility serves as an important correctional anchor in northeastern New Mexico.
NENMCF is a Level 2 and Level 3 male correctional facility with a capacity of more than 600 inmates, commonly reported at about 625 to 628 beds. The institution was built in 2007 and provides secure housing for inmates requiring medium-level supervision within the state prison system. Because of its remote location, the facility plays a major regional role in housing offenders from across New Mexico while also supporting jobs and public-sector operations in the Clayton area.
The facility is currently led by Warden John W. Beaird, with Cecilia Baker serving as Deputy Warden. Under state operation, the prison focuses on secure custody, inmate classification, rehabilitation programming, and reentry preparation. NMCD identifies the facility as offering educational and reprogramming opportunities, which are intended to support institutional stability and help inmates prepare for eventual return to the community.
Operationally, the Northeast New Mexico Correctional Facility includes secure housing units, inmate services, visitation operations, food service, medical coordination, religious access, recreation, education, and programming space. As a state-run prison, it follows New Mexico Corrections Department policies rather than private contractor procedures. This distinction is important for families because visitation, mail, inmate search, grievance procedures, and facility rules now fall under NMCD’s state prison system.
Today, the Northeast New Mexico Correctional Facility remains one of the key state prisons serving New Mexico’s adult male population. Its transition away from GEO management marked a significant change in oversight and accountability, placing the facility fully within the state correctional structure. Under Warden John W. Beaird, NENMCF continues balancing security needs with education, rehabilitation, and reentry-focused programming for inmates housed in northeastern New Mexico.
