Originally a military camp named after Civil War general William Tecumseh Sherman, CCI transitioned into a federal penitentiary, hosting notable prisoners such as Charles Manson and bootlegger Junior Johnson. Presently, serial killer Anthony Sowell resides there awaiting execution. Additionally, country music icon Johnny Paycheck served time at CCI, where his friend Merle Haggard performed for inmates.

CCI maintains a database of current inmates and their locations within the system. To locate an inmate, begin by using the DOC locator tool, which requires entering the first three letters of the inmate's first and last name, allowing for variations in spelling.

If unable to locate the desired information through free resources, users may opt to use the Arrest Record Search, which requires payment. While this option incurs a small fee, it provides access to the most up-to-date data available.

Visitation Information

Visitors must be processed in no later than 9:30 a.m. for morning sessions (8–11 a.m.) and 1 p.m. for afternoon sessions (noon to 3 p.m.). Visit reservations must be made through the ViaPath portal no earlier than 14 days in advance. Visiting hours are subject to change without notice. Please call the institution to confirm hours before visiting.

Visitors will only be permitted to bring in one car key during a visit. All other items must be left in a locked vehicle.
