The Owen Co Jail is a low/medium-security detention center located at 291 Vandalia Ave Spencer, IN which is operated locally by the Owen County Sheriff's Office and holds inmates awaiting trial or sentencing or both. Most of the sentenced inmates are here for less than two years. Owen County accepts inmates from surrounding towns, Spencer Police Department, and the US Marshal's Service.
New detainees arrive at the jail regularly, with some being released on bail, placed under pretrial services caseloads, supervised by probation agencies, or released on recognizance with a court appearance agreement. Those who are not released await their court appearances at the jail, receiving accommodations including bedding and meals. You can see all the arrest records for Indiana here.
The Owen County Security Center, also known as the jail, houses the county's inmate population. The jail staff takes care of security and maintaining inmates in the jail facility. Those duties include, but are not limited to, intake of inmates, passing medications, conducting visits, monitoring all inmates, and providing meals.
All incoming mail is given to inmates Monday through Saturday and is inspected for contraband. Mail must have first name, last name, and complete return address. Packages that are accepted include religious material and books. No other packages, books, or magazines are accepted. The books must be from the publisher, not an individual. Money orders to be placed on an inmate’s account are accepted through the mail. Only items on plain white paper will be accepted. No cards, photos, or any other materials will be given to the inmates. Photos copies will be made of each of those items, but not the originals.
COMMISSARY
The inmates may purchase items from commissary on a daily and weekly basis. Items available for purchase include hygiene items, food items, clothing items, and some personal items such as phone cards. To make a purchase on commissary, inmates can receive money orders to be applied to their inmate account.
MONEY ORDERS
The Owen County Security Center accepts money orders at any time in the lobby or by mail. They are processed daily by the jail staff in the morning. When you fill out a money order, the “pay to” is the name of the inmate you wish you credit. Make sure to fill out the money order completely and correctly. Do not use the money order to communicate messages to the inmate.
CHURCH SERVICES
Several churches in the area provide services for the inmates. On Wednesday, the Reformers Unanimous from Lifeway Baptist Church provide services for both men and women. Another service is provided on Wednesday. There is also a service provided on Sunday in the facility by the House of Prayer located in Ellettsville.
PERSONAL PROPERTY
An inmate may release personal property to a friend or family member. The person that the information is being released to must bring photo I.D., and the release must be approved by the inmate.
