If someone you love is locked up in Rhode Island, getting money into their account covers commissary - food, hygiene, phone time, writing supplies - and keeps the connection alive. Rhode Island runs a unified corrections system: the Rhode Island Department of Corrections (RIDOC) operates all adult facilities on a single campus in Cranston. There are no separate county jail systems in Rhode Island.
The current deposit vendor for RIDOC is Access Secure Deposits, which operates through Access Corrections. JPay online deposits are no longer accepted - RIDOC's family page explicitly states this. Anyone still using or searching for a JPay link for Rhode Island will find it does not work.
Who can deposit money
Before sending anything, you need to be on the inmate's approved visiting list. RIDOC requires depositors to be on the visiting list except during the first 30 days after a person arrives, when anyone can deposit during a grace period.
There is also a provision for out-of-state family members or friends who cannot visit in person: inmates may have two "money purposes only" names on their visiting list beyond the standard nine authorized visitors. These individuals go through a background check and are authorized to make deposits but are not permitted to visit in person. Ask the inmate to add you through that provision if you are out of state.
Photo ID is required for all deposit methods - a driver's license, state ID, or passport.

RI Department of Corrections
Inmate Accounts Office

RIDOC will also send deposit slips on request - mail a self-addressed stamped envelope to the same address. Using a deposit slip helps ensure funds are posted to the correct account.
How the account works
All money held at RIDOC - money an inmate brings in at commitment, wages earned at prison, and money deposited by family and friends - is held in trust in the inmate's account. Inmates are not permitted to have cash on their person. They can spend account funds on commissary items, magazine subscriptions, and sending money home. Inmates can check their account balance via kiosks.
The inmate ID number is required for all deposit methods. Find it using the RIDOC Incarceration Search at doc.ri.gov/family-visitors/incarceration-search.

Phone calls and Securus
RIDOC's phone system is operated by Securus Technologies. Phone accounts are separate from the commissary trust account. To fund an inmate's ability to make calls, set up a Securus account. Phone calls and deposit accounts are administered separately - money deposited through Access Corrections funds commissary; Securus handles phone service.
No separate county jail system
Rhode Island does not operate separate county jails in the way most states do. The entire adult corrections system runs through RIDOC. If a person is incarcerated in Rhode Island under state jurisdiction, they are in the RIDOC system in Cranston.
Federal custody in Rhode Island
The Donald W. Wyatt Detention Facility in Central Falls (950 High Street) is a federal contract facility that holds federal inmates including those under United States Marshals Service custody. It is not a traditional BOP-operated facility, but federal deposits generally go through the BOP Trust Fund system via Western Union, MoneyGram, or bop.gov using the eight-digit BOP register number. Confirm current deposit instructions directly with Wyatt Detention at 401-729-5100.
