All Rhode Island state correctional facilities are part of the Adult Correctional Institutions (ACI) campus in Cranston. Mail goes directly to each facility using a facility-specific PO Box - there is no centralized scanning address. White envelopes only.
As of the family/visitors page updated April 25, 2025: JPay online deposits are no longer accepted. Access Corrections is now the deposit vendor.
Rhode Island RIDOC refers to incarcerated people as "inmates" throughout its materials.
Sending mail - letters and correspondence
All mail must arrive via U.S. Postal Service only. Packages or letters sent via UPS, FedEx, or any commercial carrier are not accepted.
Use the mailing address for the specific facility where the inmate is housed. Include the inmate's identification number on all mail.
Envelope requirements:
- White envelopes only (effective October 1, 2012)
- Manila envelopes permitted from attorneys only
- No colored envelopes of any kind
- Sender pays all postage - no C.O.D.
- Ensure proper postage is affixed; under-postaged mail with a return address is returned to sender
Do NOT include:
- Postage stamps (inmates purchase stamps through commissary; stamps may not be given at visits or sent through mail)
- Cash, checks, money orders, or drafts (these are seized, forwarded to the Inmate Accounts Office, and a receipt is given to the inmate)
Incoming mail: all non-privileged mail may be opened, inspected for contraband, and read by authorized RIDOC staff. Photos featuring nudity may be disallowed. If an item is removed from a mailing, a written record is made and a copy given to the inmate.
No limit on mail volume under normal circumstances. However, mail may be restricted if there is a reasonable belief it threatens safety, order, or discipline.
Incoming mail is distributed to inmates within 24 hours of receipt from USPS, excluding weekends, holidays, and emergency situations.
