Located at 1600 North Dr in Sioux Falls, SD, Jameson Annex carefully assigns inmates based on their custody level, considering factors like criminal history. Jameson Annex offers diverse educational and vocational programs aimed at equipping offenders for successful reintegration into society and reducing recidivism. Through these initiatives, inmates gain skills and confidence, fostering personal growth and resilience.

The G. Norton Jameson Annex, established in February 1993, serves as a secure adjunct to the main structure of the South Dakota State Penitentiary. Comprising three housing units—Unit A, Unit B, and Unit D—enclosed within a secure perimeter, it primarily houses maximum-custody inmates and functions as a disciplinary segregation unit. Additionally, the annex houses the Admissions and Orientation Unit, facilitating the intake process for new entrants into the South Dakota Department of Corrections. Moreover, it hosts a dedicated Mental Health Unit to address the psychological well-being of inmates.

In tandem with its high-security housing units, the Jameson Annex also features a Minimum Center located outside its perimeter fence, established simultaneously in February 1993. This center caters to minimum-security offenders, providing an alternative housing arrangement suited to their lower-risk profile.

Operating at Level V security classification, the Jameson Annex adheres to the most stringent security standards, ensuring the safe containment and management of its inmate population. This classification underscores its role as a critical component of the state's correctional infrastructure, tasked with housing and managing individuals deemed to require the highest level of security.

The annex's namesake, G. Norton Jameson, served as Warden of the Penitentiary from 1938 to 1963, leaving a lasting legacy of leadership and commitment to the correctional system. The naming honors his significant contributions and enduring impact on the institution and its operations, serving as a reminder of his dedicated service during his tenure.
