Located at 1600 North Dr in Sioux Falls, SD, SDSP carefully assigns inmates based on their custody level, considering factors like criminal history. SDSP offers diverse educational and vocational programs aimed at equipping offenders for successful reintegration into society and reducing recidivism. Through these initiatives, inmates gain skills and confidence, fostering personal growth and resilience.

The SDSP, situated in northern Sioux Falls on approximately thirty acres of land, holds a significant historical legacy. Originally established as a territorial prison in 1881, it transitioned into the South Dakota State Penitentiary upon the state's admission to the Union in 1889. While many of the original structures from its early days still stand, numerous modifications and expansions have taken place over the years to accommodate evolving needs.

Comprising three housing units, the main facility of the Penitentiary operates as a Level IV institution, signifying a high level of security. Additionally, the G. Norton Jameson Annex, established adjacent to the main facility, commenced operations in February 1993, serving as an extension of the Penitentiary.

In terms of inmate employment, two primary categories exist: institutional support and prison industries. Institutional support roles encompass tasks such as food service, clerical work, cell maintenance, and general facility upkeep. On the other hand, prison industries encompass a diverse array of vocational activities, including upholstery, printing, sign manufacturing, license plate production, carpentry, bookbinding, machining, Braille transcription, garment manufacturing, and data entry. While most of these activities occur within the Penitentiary premises, garment production and data entry operations are exceptions. The prison's industrial endeavors predominantly cater to governmental agencies, providing valuable goods and services while offering inmates opportunities for skill development and productive engagement.

The SDSP stands as a testament to the state's commitment to correctional management and rehabilitation. Through its blend of historical significance, modern facilities, and inmate employment initiatives, the Penitentiary aims to fulfill its dual mandate of maintaining security and fostering inmate reintegration into society.
