INTRO
If your loved one is approaching release from a South Carolina state prison, the state's residential reentry infrastructure is anchored by one organization: the Alston Wilkes Society (AWS), a Columbia-based nonprofit founded in 1962 that has grown into the largest statewide nonprofit reentry agency in South Carolina.
AWS operates four Residential Reentry Centers under federal BOP contracts - confirmed locations in Columbia (1218 Bull Street, Richland County) and North Charleston (3290 Meeting Street Road, Charleston County), with two additional locations to be confirmed from the AWS website. Each center provides 24-hour supervision, housing, food, and intensive case management, alongside anger management, life skills, financial education, and substance abuse counseling.
On the state side, SCDC operates the Livesay Correctional Institution A Camp in Spartanburg (104 Broadcast Drive) - formerly the Livesay Pre-Release Center - as a work release facility for minimum-custody male inmates approaching release. SCDC's Palmer Pre-Release Center is a second state option.
For federal inmates, South Carolina falls under BOP Residential Reentry Management Atlanta. Pull current South Carolina federal RRC listings from bop.gov; Alston Wilkes is the confirmed primary contractor.
Transitional housing options in South Carolina outside the AWS network are described as limited - most released individuals rely on halfway houses, recovery residences, and nonprofit programs that vary significantly by county.
ALSTON WILKES SOCIETY - SOUTH CAROLINA'S REENTRY ANCHOR
The Alston Wilkes Society was founded in 1962 by the Reverend Eli Alston Wilkes, Jr., originally as the South Carolina Therapeutic Association, to provide rehabilitative services to adults released from correctional facilities. More than 60 years later, AWS has grown into the state's largest nonprofit reentry organization, serving thousands of people annually through its RRCs, veterans programs, youth services, and nine Community Service Coordinators stationed across South Carolina.
AWS's RRC model is notable for its outcomes: the organization claims success rates "far exceeding national averages" and credits its programs with helping South Carolina achieve one of the nation's lowest recidivism rates. The four RRCs operate under federal BOP contracts, meaning federal inmates in South Carolina are placed there through the standard BOP case manager process. AWS may also serve state SCDC clients - families should inquire directly at (803) 799-2490.
AWS also operates the Alston Wilkes Veterans Home - the first transitional housing facility specifically for veterans in the South Carolina Midlands - and Supportive Services for Veteran Families (SSVF) programming to prevent veteran homelessness.
LIVESAY CI A CAMP - STATE WORK RELEASE
Livesay Correctional Institution A Camp at 104 Broadcast Drive, Spartanburg (803-734-1375) was South Carolina's original Livesay Pre-Release Center before being reclassified as a minimum-out custody correctional institution in July 2007. It continues to function as a work release facility for male inmates - residents work community jobs during the day and return to the facility at night. This is SCDC's primary stand-alone pre-release work release program for state inmates.
SEX OFFENDER RESTRICTIONS IN SOUTH CAROLINA
South Carolina law (S.C. Code §23-3-545) prohibits registered sex offenders on parole or probation from residing within 1,000 feet of a school, daycare center, children's recreational facility, park, or playground. The inclusion of parks and playgrounds makes this one of the broader restriction categories in this directory. Most halfway houses and pre-release facilities cannot accommodate registered sex offenders. Contact SCDC and the SC Department of Probation, Parole and Pardon Services (dppps.sc.gov / 803-734-9220) for placement options.
