I did not serve my time in South Carolina. I served 66 months in the federal system, at FCI Miami, and I want to be clear about that from the start. What I know about South Carolina comes from thirteen years of helping families navigate incarceration from the outside, not from a cell in any SCDC facility.
South Carolina's system changed significantly in late 2025 and early 2026. Three things families need to know before anything else.
First, since November 3, 2025, only people who are on the inmate's approved visitor list can deposit money into an inmate's trust fund account. If you are not on the approved visitor list, you cannot send money. Money orders now require the sender's name to match exactly what appears on the approved visitor list, and must include the sender's Visitor ID Number from the GTL visitation scheduling system. This change has created a backlog -- approval processing is taking longer than usual. Start the application as soon as possible.
Second, since October 1, 2025, publications can only be sent from approved vendors listed on the SCDC website. Books ordered from Barnes & Noble or Books-A-Million must be purchased online and shipped directly -- books purchased in-store will be rejected and sent to contraband.
Third, beginning February 12, 2026, SCDC simplified its visitation application process. The new application is submitted online at scdoc.gtlvisitme.com/app. Adults need a driver's license to apply; minors need a long-form birth certificate. If you already have a Visitor ID number, you are still approved.
Here is what I know about South Carolina, and here is what I know about the part that never changes.
What the South Carolina system looks like
The South Carolina Department of Corrections -- SCDC -- oversees the state's adult correctional facilities. The official website is doc.sc.gov. To search for an incarcerated person, use the SCDC Inmate Search at doc.sc.gov/inmate-search-disclaimer. Toll-free inmate information line: 1-866-727-2846. SCDC family information line: 803-896-8500. SCDC headquarters: 4444 Broad River Rd, Columbia, SC 29221.
SCDC operates 21 institutions categorized as close security, medium security, and minimum security (including community-based pre-release/work centers).
Contact vs. non-contact visits: Visits at maximum-security and higher-security medium-custody institutions are non-contact (plexiglass booths). Those institutions are Broad River, Kershaw, Kirkland, Lee, Lieber, McCormick, Perry, Ridgeland, and Turbeville. All other institutions allow contact visits: Allendale, Camille Graham, Evans, Goodman, Leath, Livesay, MacDougall, Manning, Palmer, Trenton, Tyger River, and Wateree River.
Phone: SCDC uses GTL/ViaPath (ConnectNetwork) for inmate phone service. Inmates are issued a PIN within one week of admission. Phone calls for medium and close custody male inmates are restricted to 6 a.m. to 11:30 p.m. (since October 27, 2025). Inmates cannot call toll-free numbers. Set up a prepaid AdvancePay account at connectnetwork.com to receive calls. To block calls: 1-866-230-7761.
Electronic messaging: GettingOut (GTL/ViaPath). Set up an account at gettingout.com to send electronic messages, photos, and eCards. All messages may be reviewed by SCDC staff.
Video visits: GTL Visit Me at scdoc.gtlvisitme.com/app. Available at all institutions. Virtual (video) visits Monday-Friday at some institutions -- contact the institution for the schedule. Virtual visits require being on the approved visitor list.
Visitation: Apply online at scdoc.gtlvisitme.com/app (new process since February 12, 2026). Adults submit a driver's license; minors need a long-form birth certificate. Children age 10 and older must have a government-issued photo ID to visit. Children age 9 and younger must have a long-form birth certificate for the day of the visit.
All visits must be scheduled at least 15 hours in advance through the GTL scheduler at scdoc.gtlvisitme.com/app. Visits are offered Saturday and Sunday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., in 2-hour blocks. Up to 4 visits per month; 1 per weekend. Up to 4 visitors at a time (at least 1 must be an adult). For questions: visitation@doc.sc.gov.
Mail: Personal mail goes directly to the specific facility (inmate name and SCDC number). All mail subject to inspection.
Publications (effective October 1, 2025): Only from approved vendors listed at doc.sc.gov. Books from Barnes & Noble and Books-A-Million must be ordered online only -- in-store purchases are rejected and sent to contraband. A legitimate invoice or receipt on business letterhead must be enclosed.
Money (effective November 3, 2025): Only approved visitors may deposit funds. Online deposits through ConnectNetwork at web.connectnetwork.com. Money orders by mail: sender's name must match exactly the name on the approved visitor list; must include Visitor ID Number (found in upper right of the GTL visitation scheduling system). Money orders mailed to the SCDC Financial Accounting Branch PO Box (confirm current address at doc.sc.gov).
Note: Use the same legal first and last name from your driver's license/ID on all systems -- GTL visitation, ConnectNetwork deposits, and any money orders.
Inmate search: doc.sc.gov/inmate-search-disclaimer. Inmate information line: 1-866-727-2846.

The children in it
South Carolina is a state of significant geographic spread -- from the upstate mill towns near the North Carolina border to the Lowcountry coast south of Charleston. Facilities are distributed across the state, and a family in Greenville with someone at Lieber Correctional in Ridgeville is looking at nearly three hours each way through the midlands.
What children carry during a parent's incarceration is not geographic -- it is constant regardless of the distance.
My kids ranged from 9 to 20 when I went in. Six of them. What each age needed was different.
The youngest ones -- 9, 10, 11 -- cannot locate the explanation for a parent's absence anywhere except inside themselves. The private story they build almost always implicates them. You have to say the words on every call: this is not your fault. I love you. I am still your parent. The call is where those words get said. Set up the GTL account before the first week is done so the calls come through from the start.
The middle-school ones are managing difference. A parent in prison makes them different from their peers. They need a parent who knows their actual day -- the teacher by name, what happened at practice last week, what is going on in their life rather than what is going on inside. The GettingOut message is one more channel for that attention.
The teenagers will test whether you are real. A lecture from inside is the fastest way to lose them. Ask a genuine question. Listen to the full answer. Hold the opinions you cannot act on. The relationship is worth more than being right.
The young adults are choosing. What you do from inside is the only argument that counts.
What the outside parent carries
South Carolina's November 2025 money policy is the most practically disruptive change in the recent series of updates. Before it, anyone could send money to an inmate's trust fund. After it, only approved visitors can deposit. And the approval process has been backed up since the policy went into effect -- SCDC has noted that processing is taking longer than normal.
This connects everything: the visitor application unlocks the visit, the video visit, and the ability to send money. It is the first form to submit, on the first day.
The Visitor ID Number from the GTL scheduling system is now required on every money order. Families who have never used the online scheduling system and are unfamiliar with it may not know their Visitor ID. It is in the upper right corner of the scdoc.gtlvisitme.com/app dashboard once logged in.
My wife managed 66 months of the full logistics -- the accounts, the applications, the drives, the six children, the household -- without ever saying a word against me to our kids. She protected the relationship between me and our children as something worth saving. I came home to a family that still wanted me there because she made that choice every single time.
If you are that person in South Carolina right now -- submitting the new online visitor application at GTL, setting up ConnectNetwork for phone, creating the GettingOut account for messaging, finding your Visitor ID Number -- you are doing the work that holds the family together. From the outside, it can feel like constant form-filling. From the inside, it is everything.

Where this leaves you
South Carolina updated three major family-facing policies in the span of six months: publication vendor restrictions in October 2025, money deposit restrictions in November 2025, and a new visitation application process in February 2026. Families navigating the system with older information are working from an outdated map.
The visitor application is everything: it unlocks visits, video visits, and money. Apply at scdoc.gtlvisitme.com/app today. Find your Visitor ID Number once approved. Use it on every money order.
The child in South Carolina waiting to hear from a parent in an SCDC facility needs what every child needs: proof that the parent is still there. That proof comes through the call, the GettingOut message, the video visit, the in-person visit when the drive can be made.
I came home from 66 months to a family that was still whole. Both sides kept building it from wherever they were. Whatever South Carolina places between you and the person you love, the building is still possible.
Do the work. It is the whole thing.
