South Dakota prison visitation rules, walk-up in-person visits, and the 72-hour video deadline

South Dakota SDDOC visitation rules, no advance scheduling for in-person visits (December 2023), 72-hour video visit requirement, annual renewal, GTL platform, and SAFER SD program. InmateAid.

INTRO

South Dakota's Department of Corrections (SDDOC) operates eight state correctional facilities housing approximately 4,000 people - one of the smaller systems in the directory. The facilities range from the South Dakota State Penitentiary in Sioux Falls to Mike Durfee State Prison in Springfield to the South Dakota Women's Prison in Pierre.

Effective December 2023, SDDOC made a significant change to in-person visiting: advance scheduling is no longer required. Approved visitors can walk up during facility visiting hours and visit without a prior appointment. This puts South Dakota alongside Missouri and Florida as one of the few states in the directory that does not require advance scheduling for in-person visits.

The walk-up policy applies only to in-person visits. Video visits still require 72 hours advance scheduling through the GTL platform.

South Dakota uses commercial bail bonds - bail_banned = false.

VISITOR APPLICATION - ANNUAL RENEWAL

All prospective visitors must be on the approved visit list for the inmate before visiting.

Application options:

- Online: through the visitor application portal at doc.sd.gov/adult-corrections/visitors

- Printable: download the printable application from the same page, complete, and submit

- Email: VisitList@state.sd.us

- Mail: directly to the facility where the offender is housed

Annual renewal required: South Dakota visitor approvals must be renewed annually. If your approval lapses, you must reapply before visiting. This is one of the shorter renewal cycles in the directory - New Mexico requires renewal every 2 years; Oklahoma every 3 years; South Dakota requires renewal every year.

Offenders are notified of changes to their approved visitor list.

IN-PERSON VISITS - NO ADVANCE SCHEDULING REQUIRED (SINCE DECEMBER 2023)

Effective December 2023, in-person visits at all SDDOC facilities no longer require advance scheduling. Approved visitors may walk up during the facility's regular visiting hours.

This is the headline change. Before December 2023, South Dakota required advance scheduling for in-person visits. That requirement was eliminated. Approved visitors arrive during visiting hours and are processed without a prior appointment.

What this means operationally:

- No booking, no confirmation number, no scheduling portal for in-person visits

- Show up approved, show up during visiting hours, and you can visit

- First-come, first-served within visiting room capacity - arrive early for busy weekends

- The visit can still be denied if the inmate is in restricted status, disciplinary housing, or a facility lockdown

Always call the facility before a long trip to confirm there are no lockdowns, quarantines, or events affecting visiting that day. The no-advance-scheduling policy does not guarantee entry if facility conditions have changed.

VIDEO VISITS - 72 HOURS ADVANCE, GTL PLATFORM

Video visits are still scheduled in advance. All times shown in the GTL scheduling system are in Central Time.

Platform: GTL VisitMe at sddoc.gtlvisitme.com/app

Scheduling window:

- Must be scheduled no later than 72 hours prior to the desired visit time

- Can be scheduled up to 2 weeks in advance

Must be on approved visitor list to schedule video visits - the same approval required for in-person visits applies to video.

SAFER SD REENTRY INITIATIVE - FAMILY REUNIFICATION EVENTS

South Dakota operates the SAFER SD Reentry Initiative - a structured reentry framework built around rehabilitation and family connection. The initiative includes Family Reunification Events at DOC institutions that provide offenders with increased contact with their loved ones beyond traditional visitation.

Family Reunification Events feature a variety of activities at DOC institutions - not just sitting across a table. These events are announced through the SDDOC website and individual facilities.

SOUTH DAKOTA WOMEN'S PRISON - MOTHER AND INFANT PROGRAM

The South Dakota Women's Prison in Pierre operates a mother and infant program allowing incarcerated mothers to remain with their newborns for a period after birth. This program - common in only a small number of states nationally - is one of the more significant family support provisions in the directory for the women's population.

Contact the SD Women's Prison directly for current mother and infant program eligibility and requirements.

PHEASANTLAND INDUSTRIES

SDDOC operates Pheasantland Industries - a prison industries program producing signs, printed materials, braille documents, license plates, apparel, upholstery, and cabinets. The program is separate from visitation but is a notable aspect of South Dakota's correctional model for families interested in what their loved one may be doing.
