The Sweetwater Co Jail is a detention center located at 50140 Hwy 191 S Rock Springs, WY which is operated locally by the Sweetwater County Sheriff's Office and holds inmates awaiting trial or sentencing or both. Most of the sentenced inmates are here for less than two years. Sweetwater County accepts inmates from surrounding towns, Rock Springs Police Department, and the US Marshal's Service.

New detainees arrive at the jail regularly, with some being released on bail, placed under pretrial services caseloads, supervised by probation agencies, or released on recognizance with a court appearance agreement. The Sweetwater County Detention Center, overseen by lieutenants, is the primary jail facility for the County. Established in 2005, it houses not only local arrestees and inmates but also serves as a temporary holding center for those traveling through the state or even the country. This detention center is one of the largest in the state, capable of holding over 200 inmates, and it’s one of the few with a dedicated juvenile facility, a legal requirement for holding young offenders. Detention centers, in general, are typically large operations with a complex staffing structure. Like the Sweetwater County Detention Center, they may employ dozens of officers, control room staff for continuous monitoring, and various support personnel to manage the day-to-day needs of the inmate population.
