The inmates housed at Montford Unit located at 8602 Peach St in Lubbock, TX are placed according to their custody level (determined by a number of factors including the past criminal history and the length of their sentence). There are ample educational and vocational training programs for all inmates, especially ones that show a willingness to learn new things that will prepare them for a better life when they are released. The mission is to promote and prepare the offender to leave in better shape than when they arrived, giving them the best chance to never come back and thus lower the state's recidivism rate.
Montford Unit is a Texas Department of Criminal Justice (TDCJ) state prison located in Lubbock TX that specializes in housing offenders who require mental health and medical treatment. Montford Unit sometimes referred to as Montford Psychiatric Facility, is located in 1,304 acres and has the capacity to house about 1,100 male inmates. The facility has the capability to house 550 inmates in psychiatric care, 400 offenders in the Trusty Camp, an additional 84 inmates in the Western Regional Medical Facility, and 40 inmates in the Long Term Care Facility. The Western Regional Medical Facility (part of Montford Unit) has a 24-hour emergency room capable of performing various surgeries and medical laboratory tests.
Inmate housing at Montford Unit consists of multiple occupancy cells that can house up to four inmates, double-bunked cells, and single cells. Offenders who are in the trusty camp are housed in 4 dormitory styled housing units each holds 100 inmates. The facilities main area of 27 acres is secured by armed perimeter patrols and a double chain link fence with razor ribbon wire. Many of the inmates located in the Trusty Camp are placed in work assignments that provide various supportive tasks to the main unit such as maintenance, kitchen, and laundry work.
Educational programs offered at Montford Unit include adult basic education, literacy courses, and pre-release programming which helps prepare inmates for an upcoming discharge. Employment preparation services, parenting courses, life skills classes, substance abuse education and support groups are also available to offenders. Select offenders are also allowed to provide a supervised labor force to a local food bank, the Texas Department of Parks and Wildlife, and the Department of Transportation. Some inmates are also allowed to participate in on-site agricultural operations that include farming and regional pest control.

No cellphones, you will be searched before visiting. NO personal belongings. Persons under probation, parole, or other community corrections supervision must obtain the permission of both their individual supervising officer and the superintendent prior to a visit. Such visitation is not normally approved.
If the visitor is under the age of 18 and is a family member of the inmate, they must be accompanied by an adult family member or guardian to include a member of the inmate's extended family. If the visitor is under the age of 18 and is not a family member of the inmate, the minor visitor must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.
