The Montford Unit, designed to accommodate various custody levels requiring mental health or medical treatment, used to be referred to as the Montford Psychiatric Facility, with a capacity of 550 in the main unit, 400 in the trusty camp, and an additional 94 beds in the medical facility. Spanning approximately 1,304 acres, the facility is equipped to meet the diverse needs of its inmate population.

In terms of agricultural operations, Montford engages in contract farming, and regional pest control, and maintains both a unit garden and a food bank garden program. While it doesn't have manufacturing and logistics operations, the facility prioritizes unit maintenance and operates a special needs kitchen to cater to specific dietary requirements.

Medical services at Montford are comprehensive, with ambulatory medical, dental, and mental health care available around the clock. The facility boasts a range of specialized medical facilities, including a surgical suite, dialysis facility, respiratory therapy, physical therapy, chronic care clinic, and brace and limb services. Telemedicine services are also accessible, facilitating remote medical consultations.

Educational opportunities at Montford focus on literacy and pre-release programs, providing inmates with essential skills for successful reintegration into society. Additional programs and services include a faith-based dormitory, adult education programs, chaplaincy services, reentry planning, and initiatives like Crime Stoppers and the GO KIDS Initiative aimed at promoting personal growth and rehabilitation.

Visitation plays an important role in maintaining the association between inmates and their friends and family as well as strengthening family ties. Visitation Procedure Update (effective December 28, 2023)

Preparing for your visit:

Before you travel to a unit:

  • Confirm the inmate is assigned to the unit you are planning to visit and has visitation privileges.

  • Confirm the unit visitation schedule and verify that visitation has not been canceled. An eligible inmate cannot receive visitors if visitation has been canceled.

  • Do not bring cash (except coins, not more than $35).

  • No cell phones inside the secure perimeter.

  • Spiritual visits must be coordinated through the warden’s office.

Each inmate is only allowed one visit per weekend. To the extent possible, individuals on an inmate’s Visitors List should coordinate with one another and with the inmate to prevent subsequent visitors from being declined when they arrive at the unit.
