Despite its relatively small size of approximately 12 acres, the facility provides essential medical services, including ambulatory medical and dental care. Managed by UTMB, it ensures comprehensive healthcare support, with telemedicine services available for remote consultations. Moreover, the facility offers housing with CPAP accommodations on a single level, enhancing accessibility for inmates with specific needs.

A key focus of the Kyle Unit is its specialized treatment programs, including the In-Prison Therapeutic Community (IPTC), Substance Abuse Felony Punishment Facility (SAFP), and Special Needs Substance Abuse Felony Punishment Facility (SAFPF). These programs aim to address the root causes of substance abuse and facilitate rehabilitation among inmates.

In terms of education, the Kyle Unit offers Adult Basic Education, Pre-GED, and GED programs to enhance inmates' academic skills and prepare them for successful reentry into society. Additionally, the facility provides various programs and services such as chaplaincy services, a faith-based dormitory, the GO KIDS Initiative, and the Progressive Animal Welfare Society (PAWS) to support inmates' holistic development.

Community engagement is also a priority at the Kyle Unit, with inmates participating in community work projects benefiting local organizations. Inmate Visitation

Visitation plays an important role in maintaining the association between inmates and their friends and family as well as strengthening family ties. Visitation Procedure Update (effective December 28, 2023)

Preparing for your visit:

Before you travel to a unit:

  • Confirm the inmate is assigned to the unit you are planning to visit and has visitation privileges.

  • Confirm the unit visitation schedule and verify that visitation has not been canceled. An eligible inmate cannot receive visitors if visitation has been canceled.

  • Do not bring cash (except coins, not more than $35).

  • No cell phones inside the secure perimeter.

  • Spiritual visits must be coordinated through the warden’s office.

Each inmate is only allowed one visit per weekend. To the extent possible, individuals on an inmate’s Visitors List should coordinate with one another and with the inmate to prevent subsequent visitors from being declined when they arrive at the unit.
