Neal Unit is a State - medium state correctional facility in Amarillo, TX, operated by the Texas Department of Corrections. Inmates serve sentences ranging from one year to life and have access to programs including education, vocational training, and work assignments. Communication is important, the prison offers a phone program for outbound calls only, with inmates unable to receive incoming calls. Accepting collect calls can be expensive, sometimes exceeding $10 per call. Click here for discounts on inmate calls, especially if the communication with your inmate is frequent. It's important to remember that all phone calls are recorded, and discussing sensitive legal matters over these lines is discouraged.
While incarcerated, reading is often the best use of time. Please note that books and magazines, puzzles, and word searches ordered for inmates must come directly from the publisher. This policy ensures that the items are new, untampered, and comply with the facility's regulations. Prisons and jails enforce this rule to prevent the introduction of contraband or prohibited materials. By restricting orders to publishers, the facility can better maintain security and control over the content entering the institution. Any books or magazines not received directly from the publisher will be rejected and not delivered to the inmate. You may, however, send letters and selfies to inmates with this easy-to-use app, packages starting at only $8.00.
Neal Unit is a mixed-custody (minimum G1 and G2 offenders and medium-high level G4 inmates) state prison incarcerating about 1,750 adult male Texas Department of Criminal Justice (TDCJ) prisoners, located in Amarillo TX. Neal Unit is situated on 592 acres of land it shares with Clements Unit. Inmates housed here can work in a beef processing plant, in unit maintenance, and a unit garden.
Select inmates may work in supervised projects for the Texas Department of Transportation and local government based agencies usually providing a labor force. Inmates are encouraged to take educational and vocational programs that would benefit them in successful reentry. Programs offered include carpentry, electrical trade, culinary arts, adult basic education, literacy, and GED courses.
Inmates who are incarcerated for sex-based crimes may be required to participate in the Sex Offender Treatment Program (SOTP). Inmates with drug and alcohol issues should participate in substance abuse education offered at the Neal Unit. Support groups such as Alcoholics and Narcotics Anonymous are available, and religious and faith-based programs are provided through the chaplain's office.
