Estes Unit is a privately run minimum-medium security prison by Management Training Corporation (MTC) contracted to operate this Texas Department of Criminal Justice (TDCJ) Unit with the capacity of 1,040 adult male inmates. Inmates can take adult basic education classes and earn a GED during their incarceration. They can participate in vocational studies that include carpentry, plumbing, electrical, culinary arts, commercial cleaning, and computer technologies. Substance abuse treatment, life skills courses, and various support groups are also available here.

One of the more unique programs offered at Estes Unit is an animal rehabilitation program which pairs offenders with dogs who have been neglected or abused and are currently housed in a local animal shelter. The ten-week program provides obedience training to the dog and benefits the offender in multiple ways. After completing obedience training the dog is adopted out to a new family.

No cellphones, you will be searched before visiting. NO personal belongings. Persons under probation, parole, or other community corrections supervision must obtain the permission of both their individual supervising officer and the superintendent prior to a visit. Such visitation is not normally approved.

If the visitor is under the age of 18 and is a family member of the inmate, they must be accompanied by an adult family member or guardian to include a member of the inmate's extended family. If the visitor is under the age of 18 and is not a family member of the inmate, the minor visitor must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.
