The Huntsville Unit, primarily accommodating male inmates, has a capacity of 1,705 individuals across various custody levels, including G1-G3, Security Detention, and Transient. Spanning an area of approximately 54 acres, the facility hosts several manufacturing and logistics operations, including a Textile Mill, Garment Production Warehouse, and Mechanical Department offering services such as Gas Engine Repair, Tractor Repair, Welding, and Machine Shop facilities.

Facility operations focus on maintaining the unit's infrastructure, ensuring its smooth functioning. Additionally, the Huntsville Unit serves as a Regional Release Site, facilitating the discharge, parole, and mandatory supervision processes for released inmates. It also houses a Media Center, providing inmates access to educational and recreational materials.

Medical services at Huntsville are comprehensive, offering ambulatory medical, dental, and mental health care, with housing options available to accommodate individuals requiring CPAP therapy. Managed by UTMB, these services prioritize the health and well-being of inmates.

Educational programs at Huntsville include literacy courses like Adult Basic Education/GED and CHANGES/Pre-Release, along with career and technology programs such as Business Image Management and Multimedia, Printing and Imaging Technology, and various apprenticeship programs. Lee College Vocational courses in Auto Mechanics further enhance inmates' vocational skills.

Additional programs and services at Huntsville encompass Adult Education (subject to availability), Chaplaincy Services, Community Tours, a Faith-Based Dormitory, the GO KIDS Initiative, and Peer Education, aiming to support inmates' personal growth and rehabilitation. Inmate Visitation

Visitation plays an important role in maintaining the association between inmates and their friends and family as well as strengthening family ties. Visitation Procedure Update (effective December 28, 2023)

Preparing for your visit:

Before you travel to a unit:

  • Confirm the inmate is assigned to the unit you are planning to visit and has visitation privileges.

  • Confirm the unit visitation schedule and verify that visitation has not been canceled. An eligible inmate cannot receive visitors if visitation has been canceled.

  • Do not bring cash (except coins, not more than $35).

  • No cell phones inside the secure perimeter.

  • Spiritual visits must be coordinated through the warden’s office.

Each inmate is only allowed one visit per weekend. To the extent possible, individuals on an inmate’s Visitors List should coordinate with one another and with the inmate to prevent subsequent visitors from being declined when they arrive at the unit.
