Located at 256 Bland Farm Rd in Bland, VA, Bland Correctional carefully assigns inmates based on their custody level, considering factors like criminal history. Bland Correctional offers diverse educational and vocational programs aimed at equipping offenders for successful reintegration into society and reducing recidivism. Through these initiatives, inmates gain skills and confidence, fostering personal growth and resilience.

Bland Correctional Center is a multi-custody facility overseen by the Virginia Department of Corrections, accommodating up to 650 male inmates. The center comprises four buildings with a total of 14 housing units and three modular housing units, including a segregation unit for inmates with behavioral or security issues. Additionally, Bland functions as an intake and classification facility for inmates transferred from local jails, where offenders are assessed and assigned an appropriate facility based on security level and program needs.

Programs at Bland Correctional Center include an agriculture business providing meat and dairy products to nine regional prisons and the PUPS Program, operated in partnership with the St. Francis of Assisi Service Dog Foundation. This initiative allows inmates to live with, care for, and train puppies as service animals for individuals with disabilities.

Established in 1946, the center has undergone various expansions and upgrades over the years, including the addition of a medical building, a multipurpose building, and three modular housing units. The PUPS Program, launched in June 2002, has been a significant initiative fostering inmate rehabilitation and support for disabled individuals.

In addition to the PUPS Program, the Virginia Department of Corrections offers a range of programs and services to its inmate population of over 30,000. These programs aim to occupy inmate time constructively, reduce unrest, and promote positive growth. Core programs include inmate work activities, substance abuse treatment, mental health services, and life skills programming.

Substance abuse programming is a crucial aspect, with approximately 80% of inmates having a history of substance abuse contributing to criminal behavior. The department offers intensive substance abuse treatment through Therapeutic Community programs at six prisons statewide. These programs significantly reduce recidivism rates and are complemented by Alcoholics Anonymous and Narcotics Anonymous programs, counseling sessions, and recovery groups.

Moreover, life skills programming assists inmates in setting positive goals, transitioning back to the community, finding employment, budgeting, and managing family responsibilities. Various other specialized programs are also available to meet the diverse needs of inmates, including behavior management, anger management, and programs tailored for women offenders, geriatric inmates, and victims. Through these comprehensive efforts, the Virginia Department of Corrections aims to support inmate rehabilitation and successful reintegration into society.
