Rustburg Correctional Unit, situated in Rustburg, VA, and operated by the Virginia Department of Corrections, is a minimum security level 1 state prison accommodating up to 175 male inmates. Unlike traditional prison settings, Rustburg offers inmates a considerable degree of freedom within its fenceless compound. However, this freedom is not to be exploited, as the facility maintains strict standards.
All inmates at Rustburg are gainfully employed, primarily providing labor for the Department of Transportation by cleaning highways and roads. Additional work opportunities within the facility include kitchen duties, farm and garden maintenance, laundry services, custodial work, barbering, maintenance, and wastewater operations. The housing units consist of secured structures containing dormitories, with all inmates confined to their dorms by 9 pm.
To qualify for housing at Rustburg, inmates must not have convictions for murder, kidnapping, or sexual crimes, and they must have a clean record with no incident reports for at least 24 months, including no history of escape attempts.
