Stafford Men’s Diversion Center (SMDC), situated in Stafford, VA, is a minimum-security state prison managed by the Virginia Department of Corrections, exclusively housing adult male inmates. Admission to SMDC is contingent upon inmates being non-violent with a clean incident report.
Within the Virginia state prison system, SMDC provides a range of programs and services aimed at facilitating positive growth and behavior change among its inmate population, which exceeds 30,000 individuals. These initiatives are designed to occupy inmate time constructively, reduce unrest, and promote rehabilitation.
Prison programs at SMDC are tailored to meet the specific needs of inmates based on their security level and incident reports. Treatment planning commences upon inmates' entry into the prison system, involving comprehensive assessments to identify individual needs. Subsequently, counselors develop Treatment Plans outlining the necessary programs for each inmate, with progress evaluated annually.
Core programs at SMDC encompass inmate work activities, substance abuse treatment, mental health services, and life skills programming. Notably, substance abuse programming targets inmates with histories of substance abuse contributing to criminal behavior, offering intensive treatment through Therapeutic Community (TC) programs.
In addition to substance abuse treatment, SMDC offers education programs, support groups like Alcoholics Anonymous and Narcotics Anonymous, and life skills courses. These aim to equip inmates with essential tools for successful reintegration into society upon release. Furthermore, a variety of other programs address specific inmate needs, ranging from behavior management to specialized support groups.
Stafford Diversion Center maintains a database of current inmates and their locations within the system. To locate an inmate, begin by using the DOC locator tool, which requires entering the first three letters of the inmate's first and last name, allowing for variations in spelling.
