Sussex I State Prison, a level 5 state facility positioned just below maximum security, Sussex I houses inmates with long sentences, often life or multiple life sentences. Situated on the same property as Sussex II, the facility accommodates 1,125 maximum-security inmates, including those on death row.
Security measures at Sussex I include multiple razor-wire fences and four armed guard towers. Inmates have access to comprehensive medical, dental, and mental health treatment services, along with opportunities for educational and vocational training. Re-entry programs are also available to inmates approaching their release date, aiming to facilitate their successful transition back into society.

Conversely, inmates nearing release, housed in medium or minimum custody facilities, participate in programs focused on reducing recidivism.
Treatment planning commences upon inmates' entry into the prison system, with periodic evaluations to assess progress and adjust treatment plans accordingly. Core programs at Sussex I encompass inmate work activities, substance abuse treatment, mental health services, and life skills programming. Substance abuse programming targets a significant portion of the inmate population, with Therapeutic Community (TC) programs operating across various prisons statewide, offering rigorous treatment aimed at addressing substance abuse and criminal behavior.
In addition to core programs, Sussex I and other prison facilities offer a range of specialized services to meet the specific needs of inmates, ranging from behavior management and women offender programs to anger management and geriatric services. Apply for Visitation - Submit a visitation application online if you are a new visitor or renewing your visitation privileges.
Schedule a Visit - Once you receive approval to visit an inmate in a VADOC facility, you must schedule your visit online using the Visitation Scheduler. If you are a new user, you must first register using the “Register Today” option.
Prepare for Your Scheduled Visit - Once you have both applied for visitation and scheduled your visit, please review the following information to help you prepare for your in-person visit.
Plan - Please arrive at the facility one hour before your visit for security screening. No food or drinks will be allowed in the facility, and there will be no access to vending machines.
