WI DOC - Kettle Moraine Correctional Institution - Inmate Handbook

Kettle Moraine Correctional Institution (KMCI) operates as a medium-security male state prison, originally established in 1962 as the Kettle Moraine Boys School before transitioning to its current form in 1974. Located adjacent to the Kettle Moraine State Forest in Sheboygan County, KMCI boasts an operating capacity of 783 inmates but currently houses over 1,200 adult male inmates. The facility is fortified by stringent security measures, including two twelve-foot high razor-wire fences, seven armed guard towers, and multiple electronic detection systems. Vocational training programs at KMCI encompass a wide array of skills such as custodial maintenance, auto detailing, computer-aided drafting, cabinet making, welding, and masonry. Additionally, adult basic education courses are available for inmates without a high school diploma, leading to GED attainment. KMCI offers re-entry courses covering essential aspects of post-release life, along with a 16-week residential alcohol and substance abuse program housed in Unit 15. Various other programs target behavior modification, anger management, and domestic violence counseling. Medical, dental, and psychological services are provided to all inmates as needed, ensuring comprehensive healthcare within the facility. KMCI's commitment to innovation was evidenced in September 2001 when it hosted the first inmate job fair held within a Wisconsin correctional institution, showcasing its dedication to offender rehabilitation and community reintegration. The institution's overarching goals include ensuring public and staff safety, providing for inmates' custodial needs, facilitating skill development for community reintegration, and delivering healthcare consistent with professional standards.
