Parole review hearings are rarely held in traditional courtrooms anymore. The process has shifted significantly over the past decade and what your loved one experiences will depend largely on the state or federal jurisdiction they are in.

Most parole hearings today take place inside the prison or correctional facility where the inmate is housed. A parole board panel either travels to the facility or connects remotely. In many jurisdictions hearings are now conducted by video teleconference, by phone, or in some cases entirely on paper through a file review with no hearing at all.

The shift away from courtrooms was driven by the need to process large caseloads more efficiently. While this makes the system faster it also means the inmate has less opportunity to make a personal impression on the board.

A few things worth knowing going into a parole hearing regardless of format. The inmate's behavior record, program participation, and reentry plan carry significant weight. Letters of support from family members are accepted in most jurisdictions and can make a real difference. Submitting a strong letter before the hearing date is one of the most meaningful things a family member can do from the outside.

If you are unsure what format your loved one's hearing will take, their case manager or assigned parole officer can confirm the process for their specific jurisdiction.
