Can a Newly Released Inmate Get an ID to Travel by Air?

Once an inmate is released, is it possible to get an I.D. for that inmate in order to travel via air or can I use his birth certificate ?

Yes, and the process is more straightforward than most people expect. Newly released inmates can use their prison-issued ID together with their birth certificate to apply for a state-issued photo ID card or a driver's license. Most states accept the combination of a prison ID and birth certificate as sufficient documentation to get a permanent government ID through the DMV. Getting that ID should be one of the first priorities after release since it is needed for almost everything else, from employment to banking to travel.

For air travel specifically, a state-issued photo ID or driver's license is what TSA requires. A birth certificate alone is not sufficient for domestic air travel under current federal requirements. The prison ID on its own will not work at the airport either. He needs to get a proper government-issued ID before flying.

If he had a passport before his arrest, check whether it is still in his possession or was surrendered as part of the conviction. Passports are sometimes required to be surrendered, particularly in cases involving certain charges. If he still has a valid passport, that is accepted for domestic air travel as well.

Getting the ID sorted out quickly at the DMV using the prison ID and birth certificate is the cleanest path to being travel-ready after release.
