In prison, the rules for books are often more flexible than in county jail, but they still vary by facility.

In many prisons, especially those under the Federal Bureau of Prisons, inmates can receive hardcover books, while county jails often restrict books to paperback only.

That said, policies are not identical everywhere. Some facilities may still limit:

  • Hardcover books
  • The number of books allowed at one time
  • The types of vendors they accept

What always applies:

  • Books must be new
  • They must be sent directly from a retailer or publisher like Amazon
  • Packages from individuals are usually rejected

Best practice:
Before ordering, it is always smart to:

  • Call the facility and confirm their current rules
  • Make sure you have the correct mailing format with the inmate’s name and ID

If you cannot confirm the policy, paperback books are usually the safest option, but many prisons do allow hardcovers without issue.
