Two separate questions here and both have practical answers worth knowing before you go in.
Books from outside
Your boyfriend cannot bring you a hardback book during a visit. In person visitors are not permitted to hand deliver books, mail, or any personal items directly to an inmate at most facilities. Books must be sent by mail directly from the publisher or an approved retailer. Amazon fulfilled directly by Amazon and publishers sending directly to the facility are the most commonly accepted sources. Hardback books are also restricted at many facilities entirely. Paperbacks are more widely accepted. Check with the specific facility about their current book policy before ordering anything.
Special diet and food concerns
You can absolutely ask the warden or jail supervisor about dietary accommodations. Facilities are required to make reasonable accommodations for documented medical dietary needs and in some cases religious dietary requirements. Submit your request in writing as early as possible and be specific about what you need and why.
However the honest reality of jail food is that the menu is institutional, standardized, and not going to meet most preferences for natural or whole foods. The system is not designed with individual dietary philosophy in mind.
This is where commissary becomes your best tool. Most jails allow inmates to purchase supplemental food items through the commissary account. Tuna, mackerel, and other protein options that come in sealed mylar packages are widely available and popular for good reason. They are nutritious, filling, and do not require refrigeration or preparation. They are also one of the most practical ways to supplement institutional meals when the chowhall food does not work for you.
One thing worth knowing about commissary food items beyond their nutritional value, sealed food packages function as informal currency inside correctional facilities. Mackerel and tuna packets in particular are widely used for small trades and exchanges between inmates. Understanding this dynamic is useful context for navigating the social environment.
Make sure your account has money on it before you arrive if possible. Having commissary funds from day one gives you options that empty handed inmates do not have.
