Can you avoid GTL inmate phone charges

is there any phone service other than the rip u off Global Tel? I already use Google voice as a local phone number which brings the cost down a little bit for me. However, Global Tel is such a rip off that it would be wonderful to have an alternative option for consumers such as myself to boycot them all together.

Unfortunately, if Global Tel Link has the contract at your inmate’s facility, there is no way to completely avoid them. These companies operate as exclusive providers, which means all inmate calls must go through their system.

That said, there are ways to reduce the cost significantly, even if you cannot eliminate them entirely.

What you are already doing with Google Voice is a good start. The most effective additional step is:

  • Use a local number setup (like InmateAid) that matches the facility’s area code

This works because:

  • Your inmate dials a local call instead of long distance
  • The per-minute rate drops substantially
  • You still pay the provider, but at a much lower rate

Important to understand:

  • You cannot bypass GTL completely because they control the system
  • You will still need an account with them
  • The savings come from lowering the rate, not replacing the provider

So while a full boycott is not realistic, using a local number strategy is the closest thing to working around the high costs and can save a significant amount each month.
