Can you send clothes before inmate arrives
Can I pre-send clothing to inmate before he gets there? My son is currently in L.O.L facility and will be coming there in couple weeks.
In most cases, you cannot send clothing to a prison before an inmate arrives, and even after arrival, facilities usually do not allow clothing shipments from family.
Prisons issue standard clothing to every inmate, so your son will be provided with what he needs when he gets there. Some facilities also allow inmates to purchase additional items like sweatpants, t-shirts, or shoes through commissary, which are approved for use inside the facility.
Sending clothing ahead of time is typically not allowed because:
- Facilities have strict property control rules
- Items must come from approved vendors, if allowed at all
- Mailrooms will reject unauthorized packages
There are a few exceptions at certain facilities, but they are not common and usually have very specific guidelines.
The best approach is to wait until your son arrives and gets settled. Once he is there, he can find out the exact rules for that facility and let you know if anything can be sent or purchased on his behalf.
In the meantime, you can support him by sending letters, photos, or approved reading materials through services like InmateAid to help him adjust during the transition.
