This is a situation worth taking seriously before showing up at the facility.
The Texas Department of Criminal Justice runs background checks on visitors as part of the visitation approval process. If a warrant shows up during that screening it can result in denial of visitation privileges. More importantly, showing up at a correctional facility with an active warrant is a real risk to you personally. Correctional facilities are law enforcement environments and staff have access to the same databases that any officer would use to run your information.
Whether a warrant in another county automatically triggers action at a TDCJ facility depends on several factors. The type of warrant matters. A felony warrant is treated very differently than a misdemeanor warrant or a civil matter. The county that issued the warrant also plays a role. Some counties are aggressive about pursuing outstanding warrants wherever they surface and others are less proactive, particularly for minor matters.
The safest course of action before attempting a visit is to resolve the warrant first. Many warrants can be addressed proactively through an attorney without requiring you to turn yourself in directly. A defense attorney in the county where the warrant was issued can often negotiate a surrender, a bond, or a resolution that clears the warrant without significant consequences.
Going to a prison with an active warrant and having it surface during a visitor check creates problems for you and potentially disrupts your boyfriend's visitation access as well. Getting the warrant handled first protects both of you.
