How Do I Get in Touch With the Judge or Their Secretary?

You guys said to call the judge's secretary, they have the judge's ear. But, how would I get ahold of the judge's secretary or the judge? Would I just call the court house, and ask for one of them or what?

The path to a judge's secretary runs through the courthouse, not through any direct listing you will find online. Here is how to navigate it.

Call the Clerk of the Court in the jurisdiction where your family member was sentenced. When someone answers, explain that you need to contact the judge assigned to a specific case and ask for the judge's name and the courtroom or chambers number. The clerk's office maintains these assignments and can point you in the right direction.

Once you have the judge's name, ask the clerk whether there is a direct number for that judge's chambers or secretary. Many judges have a judicial assistant or secretary who handles scheduling, correspondence, and inquiries about cases on the judge's docket. That person is your actual point of contact for anything short of formal legal filings.

A few things worth knowing before you call. Judges and their staff cannot discuss the merits of a pending case with parties who are not represented by counsel or who are not official parties to the case. What you can legitimately ask about is scheduling, upcoming court dates, and procedural questions about what is on the docket. Anything related to sentencing, appeals, or case outcomes should go through an attorney.

If you are not sure which court handled the case, the charge type tells you. State charges go through the county or district court in the county of arrest. Federal charges go through the federal district court for that region. Starting with the right clerk's office gets you to the right judge faster.
