The most important thing you can do is stay out of situations before they start. Prison is not universally violent, but conflict does exist and in many facilities it is the default way disputes get settled. The best advice is straightforward: keep your mouth shut and stay out of other people's business.
Respect goes a long way inside. If you respect other people's space, their property, and their boundaries, you dramatically reduce your chances of ever finding yourself in a dangerous situation. Most inmates who avoid trouble for their entire bid do it the same way, by being mindful, staying low-key, and not giving anyone a reason to come at them.
That said, everyone is different and every facility has its own culture. What works at a minimum security camp may not apply the same way at a higher custody level. Knowing your environment matters.
What almost every inmate has in common, regardless of where they are housed, is that they want to get home. That shared goal is worth keeping front of mind. Getting into trouble has real consequences. Good time can be taken away, which pushes your release date back. In serious cases, new charges can be filed and time can be added to your sentence. No argument, no disrespect, and no conflict is worth that.
