The short answer is that they do not know automatically. You have to tell them.

InmateAid has no way to notify an inmate inside a facility that a new phone number has been set up for them. The responsibility for communicating the new number to your inmate rests entirely with you.

When InmateAid delivers your new number by text and email, that delivery includes step by step instructions explaining exactly what to do next and where your calls will forward to. If you no longer have that email check your spam folder or log into your Account Dashboard where your number and forwarding details are stored permanently.

The most reliable way to make sure your inmate knows is to tell them directly as soon as possible. If they can still reach you on your old number share the new one during that call. You can also send a letter through InmateAid with the new number clearly written inside as a reliable backup.

Once your inmate has the new number they need to submit it to their case manager or enter it through the facility phone kiosk to get it added to their approved call list. Until that step is completed calls to the new number will not connect.

Make sure your inmate understands the transition completely before you stop monitoring your old number. If they call the old number expecting you to answer and get no response they may assume something is wrong.
